Barbara Dougherty Obituary

Barbara C. Dougherty, of West Haven passed away unexpectedly on July 15, 2025. Barbara leaves her devoted husband of 46 years, John P. Dougherty, and two cherished daughters, Alyssa Dougherty and Caitlin (Kevin) Shabbott. Barbara also leaves her beloved sister, Deborah Tondalo, her niece, Vanessa Tondalo and her nephew, Brett (Venessa Luciano) Tondalo. Barbara adored and delighted in her great-nephew and nieces, Angelo, Gabriella and Harper. Barbara will be missed also by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ann and Mark Dougherty, and her uncle and aunt, Frank and Janet Dottori, along with their children and their families. Barbara was a lifelong resident of West Haven and had a long and rewarding career as a schoolteacher, beginning at Saint Louis and ending at Bailey Middle School. She was touched by her many students and shared many challenges and triumphs with her co-workers, especially her Book Club, which continued in retirement. Barbara and her husband were parishioners of Our Lady of Victory Church and were unwavering in their faith. Barbara was predeceased in death by her parents, Angelo and Phyllis (Dottori) Carlo, her brother-in-law, Pasquale Tondalo and her best friend, Elvira Cretella, all of whom she is reunited with in Heaven. Barbara's family would like to thank the staff of Yale New Haven Hospital for their care, compassion, efforts and empathy, especially Drs. Jones and Woodard. Visitation will be held Sunday July 20, 2025, from 4pm to 7pm at the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green, 662 Savin Avenue, West Haven, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday July 21, 2025 at 10 am in St. Louis Church of St. John XXIII Parish, 89 Bull Hill Lane, West Haven, CT, followed by entombment in St. Lawrence Garden Mausoleum, West Haven CT. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Barbara's name to the Easter Seals www.easterseals.com. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Barbara C. Dougherty, please visit our floral store.
