Marion Bond Obituary

Marion (Buddy) Bond

Sep 30, 1932 - Feb 27, 2026

Buddy Bond, age 93, died of heart failure on February 27, 2026 at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. May we all be as lucky as he was to pass away as he did. He had a high quality of life until 2 days before his death. At the end he was able to talk to each of his family members, and then he passed peacefully and quickly. The family is thankful to the physicians and nurses at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for their professional, expert, and tender care during his brief hospitalization. Buddy wished to express his thanks to all the staff and administration at Heritage Woods Assisting Living for the heart-warming care and camaraderie shown to him during his several years there. Buddy was also thankful that before he moved to Heritage Woods he had the world's best neighbors in Karl and Sally Yena, and Barry and Rhonda Burge. Lastly, Buddy and his wife Jeanette, who died in 2021, always appreciated the acceptance and love shown to them by the saints who are the members of the Trinity Class at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem.

Buddy was born in 1932 in Baxterville, MS (a tiny town in south Mississippi). His father had a small farm and ran a dime store. (If you are too young to know what a dime store was, look it up.) His mother, besides raising five boys, was the postmistress for Baxterville. She could read and write well, and she was willing to convert the front of her home into the post office! (It was indeed a different world in the 1930s.) Buddy graduated from Lumberton High School in 1949. He joined the Army National Guard, being honorably discharged in 1952 as a sergeant in an engineering battalion. He enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi which he said was the best decision he ever made because that was where he met Jeanette. They met in the school cafeteria where Jeanette and her friends accused him of breaking in line. Buddy (having been in the military) had been trained to keep a tight and straight line so he thought these immature girls were not paying attention and were not actually in line. A kerfuffle ensued, but it couldn't have been too adversarial because Buddy left that cafeteria with a date with Jeanette for that weekend! They married in 1954 and moved to Jeanette's hometown of Carthage, MS. Buddy was hired by his father-in-law to help manage his construction and building supply company, and an auto-parts store. After some years in Carthage, Buddy was elected a city Alderman, a position he held for 23 years. In 1986 he was elected to the Mississippi State Senate, where he served for 6 years. He was a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Carthage for many years. Eventually Buddy and Jeanette moved to Winston-Salem to be close to their grandchildren, Brooke Bond and Parker Bond. Buddy lived a remarkable life. He devoted himself to being the best husband he could be to his wife (they were married for 67 years) and the best father he could be to his two sons. Well done.

Buddy is survived by his two sons, Guy Bond of Palm Beach Gardens, FL (wife Claudia), and Brent Bond of Winston-Salem, NC (wife Pam), and his grandchildren Brooke Bond of Los Angeles, CA and Parker Bond of Ann Arbor, MI.

There will not be a funeral, but a family-only burial service in Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, any honoraria in memory of Buddy should be sent to Mount Tabor United Methodist Church or to Meals on Wheels of Winston-Salem.

Such a long life. This is a beautiful obituary of a life well lived. Now he gained his reward in Heaven. Rest in peace dear Buddy. You served your family and your life and certainly the Lord well.
