Robert Brown Obituary
Robert Brown
Jun 13, 1940 - Mar 30, 2026
Robert "Butch" "Bob" Brown, 85, passed away on March 30, 2026, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Instead of having someone else write my obituary for me, I've decided to write my own. First and last one! I am, of course, writing this in the past tense and hope I don't run out of time. I also hope you enjoy this short piece about my life. Just a plain old-school guy with old-school ideas and beliefs. A certified, licensed foster parent who learned very quickly how to change diapers for baby boys and girls right out of the hospital. Most of my adult life was trying to be a good husband and father (you've heard that before). My only activity or hobby was constantly coaching and umpiring youth sports. Barry and I were volunteer youth coaches at the Clemmons YMCA for baseball. It would have been our seventh team. Prior to coaching at the YMCA, I spent many years coaching at Southwest Forsyth Little League and Winston-Salem National Little League. In my later years, I was very active in many different activities at the Clemmons YMCA Active Older Adults (aka Silver Sneakers) program. Classes, social functions, and volunteering gave me the opportunity to meet many people, make close friendships, and "gain" a lot of buddies.
Preceding in death are my parents, Bill and Ruby; and sister, Carol. Also preceding me in death was my beloved, beautiful, intelligent, school teaching wife of 38 years, Becky. She died in January 2000. She was missed. Surviving are my son, Barry, and his wife, Angie; three grandchildren, Abby, Brandon, and Bo; and my close, dear, loyal friend and part-time caregiver, Mary Hall.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. A burial will immediately follow at Fraternity Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 3760 Fraternity Church Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
Now, I never was into flowers so in lieu of that, please consider a contribution to the Jerry Long YMCA Active Older Adults, Silver Sneakers, or the Youth Sports Program. That's 1150 S. Peace Haven Rd, Clemmons, NC 27012. Thanks.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff at Forsyth Novant Medical Center ICU and Palliative Care unit for the compassionate and professional care provided for Mr. Brown in his final two weeks of life.
