Robert Clemmer Obituary

Robert Fulton Clemmer, 81, died peacefully on March 18, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Rob was born on March 12, 1945 in Gastonia, NC to John and Louise Clemmer. He started his education at Lees-McRae college, where he met the love of his life. He received a BA in Education from Appalachian State University. He also earned his Master's in Education and Specialist Degree in Education from UNC-Greensboro.

Rob retired from the State of North Carolina after 33 years. His career in education started in Yadkin County, NC as a Teacher. He then went to Madison Mayodan as a Teacher and coach. He next was employed by the WS/FC School System serving as a Teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal and Administrator. While serving as Principal at Carver High School, he was named Principal of the year in 1990 and 1993.

Rob was a faithful member of Highland Presbyterian Church and Banner Elk Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder and Deacon. He loved to sing in the choirs at both churches and teach Sunday School.

After retirement, he and his wife moved to Banner Elk, NC where he was hired by Banner Elk Presbyterian Church to work with the youth. After 18 years in Banner Elk, he once again retired and he and his wife moved to Clemmons, NC.

Rob made a positive impression on those he met by treating them with dignity, kindness and compassion. He will be remembered by everyone for his loving ways and generosity. After God and family, he was most proud of his work teaching and mentoring young people.

Rob leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Ligon Clemmer, daughter Jean Clemmer Fortner (RD), daughter Robbyn Clemmer Mull, son William Ligon Clemmer (Carrie), three grandchildren, Kendal Ann Austin (Maverick), Brinkley Mull (Kaitlyn) & Emery Fulton Clemmer, brother Johnny Klemmer (Teresa), sister Elizabeth Seabrook, sister Lillian Bradley, brother Palmer Clemmer (Cindi), sisters-in-law Marian Clemmer, Ann Clemmer, Terry Clemmer and many nieces and nephews.

Rob was the genuine article. A friend to all who knew him and a devoted family man. Times we spent with Rob and Phyllis are among the finest memories of our time in Winston-Salem and Highland Presbyterian. Our sincere condolences to the family.

Through working together at WS/FCS, I got to know Rob well and remember him as is expressed in the obituary as kind, caring, and always willing to help when and where needed. My sincerest condolences to his family - we've lost one of the really good ones.

Mr. Clemmer was my favorite teacher at Atkins. He made history bearable. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
