Sarah Jo McGhee Spainhour

Sarah Jo McGhee Spainhour, 89, of Winston-Salem, was called home on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. She was born in Forsyth County on April 24, 1936, to the late Chester Owen McGhee and Nellie Sue Kiser McGhee.

In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Spainhour; her children, Daniel Dowell, Brenda Mabe, and Kathy Dowell; and her sister, Linda Messenger.

She is survived by her children, Richard Dowell (Mary) of San Antonio, Texas, and Tonya Rominger (Jeff) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; two special grandchildren, Jason Hawes and Stephanie King and her family; three great-grandchildren, David Hawes (Alex), Tessa Hawes, and Lyla Hawes; and her sister, Olivia Pickus of Temple City, California.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends who will forever cherish the love, conversations, and moments they shared with her. Condolences may be shared online at www.salemfh.com.

Sarah was a good friend and neighbor she will be missed.She is in no more pain,see you again my friend.

Sarah was a very good friend and neighbor for a few years.She called me her sister by another mother and father.When ever I cooked I would share with her,and she was very appreciative.I am so glad I got to spend her last Christmas with her.She will surely be missed,until we see each other again. RIP my friend.
