William Benton Obituary

William Grady Benton

August 15, 1945 - January 22, 2025

William Grady "Bill" Benton died on the morning of January 22nd. He was born to Elizabeth Holmes and M.C. "Red" Benton, Jr. in Tampa, Florida, where his father was serving in the military. He was 79 years old. He was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as a Second Lieutenant stationed in Germany in the 2nd Armored Cavalry of the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge. He married Eunice Howze Milton in 1968, and they settled in Winston-Salem. Primarily a real estate developer and syndicator by trade, he was a Director, President, or CEO of numerous enterprises. A life-long lover of dogs, his appreciation for animals expanded to cats and other furry mammals. His hobbies included sailing, photography, reading, and listening to music. His civic involvement in Winston-Salem was deep; he was a past board member of the Arts Council, Piedmont Craftsmen, the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Carolina Chamber Symphony, Habitat for Humanity, and the WSSU foundation, among many others.

In 2018, he was honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement in Philanthropy Award from the Triad chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice Benton, three sisters, Katherine Broadhurst, Carey Benton-Jewett, and Alice Lanham-Reeves, a son, Michael Benton, five nieces and nephews, and five grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorials be made to the Arts Council of W-S/FC or the Forsyth Humane Society.

A memorial service will be held in the Davis gallery of the Sawtooth School on Saturday, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m.

I am so thankful and privileged to have known Bill and worked for him for the past 25 years. During the time I have known him, he has always been ethical, kind, generous, humble and had a great sense of humor. I LOVED his stories of growing up in Winston Salem! At work, Bill could "logic" through any problem and stick with it until there was a solution. I think we worked on a property refinancing for three years. He never gave up and got the job done. During the past year or so, when he could be complaining, he was just "struggling right along" and had something humorous to say and asked about life at the office. He enjoyed seeing pictures of my grands especially the red headed one, reminding him of his sisters. He dearly loved Michael which was so evident when he received a package or call from him. He was thankful that Michael came to be with him this past year. My condolences to all his family as they carry on without him. Bill Benton, I can certainly say, you have had a life well lived! You will be missed!!!

Bill was related to my wife by marriage. I worked with him on the board of Carolina Chamber Symphony (now Music Carolina) and grew to admire his generosity and wise counsel. We had numerous pleasant musical evenings at Zevely House when he was proprietor. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

Bill lived next door for decades and we raised families together. I appreciated so much his friendship and kindness he extended to all. As a real estate entrepreneur he was a true visionary with a standard of unique quality in all he created. His love of historic preservation was a credit to Winston-Salem. I loved the historic Zevely House Restaurant circa 1815 landmark he owned and frequented often sitting beside a lit fireplace on cold nights greeting us at the door with a toast and smile. His Father was Mayor of Winston-Salem for years and built a trucking empire across America. The name Benton graces municipal buildings here in this community a tribute of this family Goodwill. Prayers and Blessings to my friend Bill for building upon his distinguished legacy.

So many memories. Surprise 40th birthday party at Inlet Inn. Letting Jon climb out the sun roof on his new BMW. Bill and Jon squirting water everywhere from the new Jaccuzzi, trips to Figure 8, and sharing office space in the Taylor House. Fair winds and following seas, Sir
