John Pope Obituary

In Loving Memory of John A. Pope October 20, 1940 – June 20, 2025 John A. Pope, 84, of Waterville, New York, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 20, 2025, at the Waterville Residential Care Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Brookfield, New York, on October 20, 1940, he was the son of the late Albert and Sarah (Walrath) Pope Sr. On January 18, 1964, John was united in marriage to the love of his life, Elaine Jury, at the First Presbyterian Church in Utica. Their blessed union of over 61 years was built on deep devotion, strength, and a lifetime of shared love, laughter, and unwavering commitment. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, John is survived by his cherished wife, Elaine; his beloved children, Beth (Vaughn) Catlin, Wayne (Tina) Pope, and Diane (Larry) Catlin; Theresa(Gary) and his adored grandchildren: Amanda (Jamaal), Joshua (Alexis), Brittany (Andrew), Ashley (Tyler), Austin (Samantha), Nicole (Cole), Elizabeth (Spencer), Makala, Trinity, Kingstin, Seth, Joshua Jr., Cora, Cameron, Baby Benson, Nathan, Jacob, and Jeffery. He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters, Eleanor Corey, Mary Wilson, Joan Race, and Ruth Pope; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. John was predeceased by his dear son, Gary Pope, and his five brothers: Albert, Larry, Don, Bob, and Kenny. John was a dedicated and hardworking man. He was employed for many years as a bus driver and mechanic with the Mount Markham Central School District, later serving as a custodian before his retirement in 1996. He was proud of his work and took great care in all that he did. A man of service and integrity, John gave generously of his time to his community. He served as a devoted Boy Scout leader for Troop 21 in West Winfield, where he created lasting memories organizing summer trips to Camp Russell. He was also a valued member of both the West Winfield Fire Department-where he served as Fire Police-and the Clayville Fire Department. His sense of duty, humility, and kindness touched all who had the honor of knowing him. To his grandchildren, John was lovingly known as "Papa." He created lifelong memories with them through small but cherished traditions, especially his famous "Papa's special eggs and toast," which will be remembered with love and a smile for generations to come. A celebration of John's life will be held at the convenience of the family, with all welcome to attend and honor his memory. The Pope family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Waterville Residential Care Center for the kindness and support shown throughout John's final chapter. A heartfelt thank you goes to James, his compassionate aide and caregiver, for his exceptional dedication and gentle care. The family also wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Barbara Jeffers and Dr. Beth Moore for their compassion, love, and unwavering support during this most difficult time.
