Vergie Doris McBrayer Musgrave

April 4, 1928 - July 19, 2025

On July 19, 2025, Vergie Doris (McBrayer) Musgrave went home to be with her mom, dad, brother, son (Richard) and Jesus. She was born on April 4, 1928 to J.N. and Revia McBrayer in Mt. Peak,Texas.

Her family came to Yuma from Texas in December 1937, found work in produce traveling back and forth between Arizona and California.

She attended 2nd Avenue Grammar School and 4th Avenue Grammar School in Yuma. Doris graduated from Yuma Union High School in 1946.

She is survived by her children Billy Mac Vannoy of San Angelo, TX, Susan (J.M.) Emerson of Knox City, TX, and Janet (Tim) Craig of Yuma. Seven grandchildren: Bill Vannoy (Cyn), Aaron Vannoy (Lisa), Amy Vannoy Katara (Dan), J Emerson (Connie), Justin Emerson (Jennifer), Amber Blomquist, Amanda Graham, 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by J.N. McBrayer (father); Revia Grady (mother), Richard Armenta (son) and Jerrel McBrayer (brother).

Her first job was at 14 with Kresses in downtown Yuma. When she heard Imperial Hardware had an opening, she hightailed it over there for higher pay and she did not have to work on Sunday. She rode her bike to work from 1st Street and 22nd Avenue to downtown Main Street each day.

At 18 years old, on June 1, 1946 she married Bill Vannoy. Together they had 2 children Billy Mac and Susan. During this time she was a stay at home mother. Together they enjoyed spending time with her mom and dad who thought the world of Billy and Susan. They were married for 9 years before divorcing.

She then married Bill Armenta. They had Janet and Richard together before divorcing in 1961. Doris was the Office Manager at Imperial Hardware. She was a devoted employee who loved her job and children. She struggled to make ends meet during this time in her life.

In 1970 she married Frank Musgrave, and together they started Green Valley Pool and Patio at 121 E 24th Street. They learned this business by a lot of trial and error, and blood, sweat and tears. They grew this business together and outgrew the 24th Street location. They bought land to build a larger building at 2301 S Avenue A in 1979. Doris and Frank divorced in 1987. Doris continued the business on her own, and was a successful and respected business owner in the community until selling the business in 2001 to Tim and Janet Craig.

Doris enjoyed trips to Texas to visit children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins. She also enjoyed traveling to New York, Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, and Europe.

She spent her last days at Desert Rose, The Hansen House, and Kindred Homes. She was very active and loved to play all different kinds of card games, bingo and enjoyed winning most of the time!

Most important to her were the times she got to spend with her family.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Hansen House, Yuma, Arizona.
