Alberta Frances Meagher, age 86, passed away peacefully from cancer on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at The Pikes Peak Hospice Unit in Penrose Hospital, Colorado Springs with her loving husband, Tom, and several family members by her side.
She was born May 17,1935 in Dickinson, North Dakota to Ralph and Anna Hatzenbeler and was the youngest of four children. Alberta (Bert) attended grade school in Ellensburg, Washington. While in the second grade, Bert met a boy named Tom, whom was quite smitten with her. While standing on the steps of the church, Tom took his mother's hand and pointed towards Bert and said with confidence, "That is the girl I am going to marry." Tom proved to be correct and they were married 14 years later on June 9th, 1956. They were married for 66 years and blessed with 7 children.
Bert, earned her degree from Central Washington College of Education. She worked as a substitute teacher for thirty years, mainly employed with Districts 11 and 12 in Colorado Springs. In addition, she volunteered with Pikes Peak hospice for over a decade. She devoted her life to her husband, family and passing on the richness of her faith. Her Catholic Faith permeated all facets of her life. Attending daily Mass was a pillar of her life, as was saying the rosary every morning.
Bert's passion for health and exercise was apparent to many people as she became a role model to all who knew her. As a member of the Country Club of Colorado, she could be found daily in the pool swimming laps, followed by workouts in the gym, then biking around the Cheyenne Mountain area and playing at least 18 holes on the golf course while carrying her own clubs. And this was in a single day! She regularly played in golf tournaments up to the age of 86, and racked up an impressive 6 holes in one. She was a true inspiration and an icon in the community.
Bert is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Anna Hatzenbeler, and her siblings, Herbert and Ralph Junior Hatzenbeler, and Dorothy Mae Waters along with her daughter, Keri Meagher, and son-in-law, Dean Walton. She is survived by her husband, Tom Meagher, sons, Mike, Brian, Scott, and Tim; daughters, Kathy Walton, and Chris Jones; son-in law, Dave Jones, daughters-in-law, Judy Meagher, Kathryn Christian and Sandra Meagher, 13 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. She will be dearly missed and forever held in our hearts. In keeping with her wishes, a private Funeral Mass was celebrated March 23, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St Paul's Catholic Church in Colorado Springs, CO. Burial followed on March 25 at Fairview Cemetery in Colorado Springs. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, Colorado Springs, CO.
