Athalie Barzee Obituary

Athalie "Lee" Barzee, 91, died on November 12, 2015, following a stroke. As was her wish, Lee passed away at home with her loved ones around her. Born Athalie Evelyn Kangiser in Brockton, Massachusetts on November 1, 1924, Lee served in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. She met Kenneth Gregory Barzee, then in the Army Air Corps, in Pampa, Texas. Lee and Kenneth were married on April 21, 1946. They created the large family she always wanted, and traveled the world courtesy of the U.S. Air Force. Lee considered childrearing her first vocation and approached it with unparalleled creativity and gusto. In the Philippines, she began to study orchids. Once settled in Colorado, she extended her studies to entomology, botany, and finally, to mycology-her primary avocation. She became an accomplished photographer, aiming her macro lens on the world of fungi. Lee founded the Pikes Peak Mycological Society in 1974 and enjoyed educating members with informative, humorous talks; challenging articles; and vivid presentations. She served as mushroom toxicology expert for the Southern Colorado Poison Control Center for many years. In 1997, Lee was honored nationally for her lifetime contributions by the North American Mycological Association with the Harry & Elsie Knighton Meritorious Service Award for Recognition of Outstanding Service.

In her later years, Lee and her youngest son, Brian, traveled to Costa Rica and Tahiti, and when she was 75, to China, fulfilling another lifetime dream. She read at least a book a day, enjoying widely varied subjects. Lee had remarkable life energy. It was not until she entered her eighties that her children could even begin to keep up with her.

Lee's husband, Kenneth; her son Leo; her brother, Jack Kangiser; and her grandson James McAuley preceded her in death. Lee is survived by her children, Jim, Mary, Theresa, Jeanette, Stephen, and Brian, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions may be sent to The Pikes Peak Mycological Society, c/o Warren Williams, Treasurer, 5131 N. Mesa Dr., Castle Rock, Colorado, 80108. Details on a much later service will be posted to their website at http://pikespeakmushrooms.org/.

I miss you Grandma. I still have the tent you could no longer use as you got older. It's the best two man tent I've known. It has accompanied me across the country twice and been with me for almost twenty years. Your love of the outdoors and camping lives in my bones. Thank you for the life you brought into this world. Your spirit is in the woods.

The first time I every looked through a microscope was at Grandma's kitchen table. Her cookie jar, her peanut butter fudge, her beautiful collections from around the world, her stash of National Geographic magazines, were all ways she shared her love and passion with us. So very lucky to have had her in my life.
