Barbara Day Obituary

Day

Barbara (Carle) Day

April 27, 1952

October 2, 2021

Barbara Carle Day gave up her battle with cancer at 2am October second at Penrose hospital where she was also born. The skills of oncologists Drs. Patel and James gave her an extension on life assisted by many others at Penrose cancer center for which she was grateful.

Part of the fourth generation of her families tourist business, Barb best loved her 30 plus years running Echo Lake Lodge on Mount Evans. Her pies were of legend. Rising early most mornings to bake them herself, she put the I in pies.

Barb knew her Colorado life was special and amazing. Working at Red Rocks Trading Post in 1964 for her mother Barbara, she saw the Beatles, an experience she never forgot. She worked at Buffalo Bills Grave for her grandmother Helen Stewart, took photographs of tour busses on Pikes Peak at Glen Cove where her father Bill Carle ran the Summit House, managed the operations at National Park Village North in Estes Park until the fire in 1992.

At that point she returned to managing Echo Lake Lodge, part of the Denver Mountain Parks system. In addition, she worked at the Hidden Inn at Garden of the Gods, the Cog Depot at the base of the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Manitou Incline, Outwest Giftfitters and Spirit Lake Traders in Grand Lake, the rebuilt Rocky Mountain Gateway in Estes Park and even spent a few days working atop Mount Evans in the Crest House. Needless to say she was the perfect ambassador for Colorado tourism.

Not wanting to see the Dam Store on Highway 34 west of Loveland close, she arranged for its purchase from the family who had owned it since 1969 and kept that local landmark open.

Known by all for being "just too nice" her generosity and hospitality will be missed up at Echo Lake and Colorado lost one of its best greeters.

Barb is survived by her son Dustin, brother Bill, numerous cousins and many friends and coworkers whom she treated just like family.

Donation for Alpine Search and Rescue or Denver Mountain Parks Foundation or Rocky Mountain Conservancy would be appreciated.

RIP dear Barbie. Thank you for being such a friend, blessing, and employer to my brother, Chris. He loved you, raved and praised you and your brother. It was a pleasure being there and meeting you all. So sorry you had to leave before we could come back again. See you on the other side. God bless the family.

As a member of the Alpine Rescue Team, Barb was a friend of our entire team. Always ready to welcome us into Echo Lake Lodge for a warm drink, homemade soup or pie after a long mission, or simply her support. She was a great Colorado citizen and a wonderful person. We will miss her dearly. Rest in peace Barb.

I knew Barb for more than 50 years. We attended school together from Little Folks Preschool through graduation from Cheyenne Mountain High School. My first job was at Hidden Inn in The Garden of the Gods. She told great stories and treated everyone she met as if they were a friend. Always. My heart goes out to Dustin and Bill. With love always.
