Barbara Saks Obituary

Barbara M. (Brown) Saks, 98, of Colorado Springs, passed away at Penrose Hospital surrounded by her loving family on January 11, 2016.

Barbara was born to Albert and Clara (Humphries) Brown on September 15, 1917, in East Ham, London, England. She graduated from the London Dame Alice Owen's School For Girls in July 1936. After graduation, Barbara worked for Lever Brothers & Unilever Ltd. in London. She left in March 1940 to volunteer in the Royal Air Force, a stint which included her work as a Women's Auxiliary Air Force Intelligence Officer with the amazing Ultra Secret group at Bletchley Park. Just after WWII ended, Barbara went to Brussels to assist the British and US Governments. It was during her time in Brussels that Barbara met and later married US Army 1st Lt. Daniel L. Saks on April 23, 1946.

Barbara worked for several companies over the years, including British Airways in NYC, Colgate Research Company, Olsten Temporary Agency and Mobil Chemical Corporation in New Jersey. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Centenary United Methodist Church in New Jersey and Kaweah Delta Hospital in California.

Barbara thoroughly enjoyed sharing her WWII experiences with friends, students, and fellow veterans. She was extremely proud of her WWII contributions, as are we. Barbara also loved sitting in her apartment while enjoying her magnificent view of Pikes Peak and the glorious valley below.

Barbara is survived by her son Alex (Beth) Saks of Colorado Springs and daughter Jackie (Chuck) Saks-Masten of Reno, Nevada. Barbara was blessed with three grandchildren, Rebekah, Anna, and Daniel Saks of Colorado Springs.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016, at 1:00 pm at Village Seven Presbyterian Church. A reception at the church will follow the service.
