Cynthia "Cindy" Smelser, 63, of Woodland Park, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2023, after several weeks in the hospital.
Cindy was born in Orange, California, on January 21, 1960. She lived in California, Florida, and the Bahamas before moving to Victor, Colorado in 1972. She graduated from Cripple Creek High School in 1978, where she helped their volleyball team go to State for the first time.
Cindy is survived by her Mother, June Fuhlrodt and her Step-Father Owen Fuhlrodt of Springfield, Missouri; her older sister and brother-in-law, Teri and Michael Beattie of Colorado Springs; her daughters, Caitlin Castillo and Erin Smelser; "her girls" (granddaughters) Aleea Smelser and Taylor Castillo; niece and grand nephews, Breeanne, Tyler, Brayden and Colton Woods of Colorado Springs and Parker, Colorado; an aunt and uncle, Betty and Larry Nicholson and many cousins of the Ash Grove, Missouri area; Tom McDade, her boyfriend of 25 plus years, of Woodland Park and his son, Jake McDade, of Texas. Her father Rev. Dr. H. Joe Edgington preceded her in death.
Prior to her illness, Cindy worked at Walmart in Woodland Park, where she had been employed since 2007. Prior to that she was a school bus driver for Woodland Park School District for over 15 years.
Camping with family and friends, going on motorcycle rides with her boyfriend, Tom, spending time with her granddaughters, watching the Denver Broncos, and Nascar Racing were among her many interests. Cindy even participated in a Nascar fantasy league with Tom, Teri, and Michael. Cindy loved the mountains and surrounded herself with many flowers, plants, and a vegetable garden which she religiously took care of during the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons. Cindy enjoyed all of life experiences that came her way and always was thoughtful and kind to everyone she met; especially with those whom she knew and who were a part of her life.
Per Cindy's wishes, her daughters and family will be holding a Celebration of Life in August. More details of her Celebration of Life will appear in this newspaper in either June or July.
