D. Hollist Obituary

Dr. D. Rich Hollist, 50, owner of Southmoor Veterninary Clinic in Fountain, CO, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2006 at his home, due to heart complications. Rich was born on May 13, 1955 in Brigham City, Utah to William D. Hollist, Jr., and Shirley Penton. He married Jerilynn Beecher on November 30, 1976 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Rich received his doctorate of veterinarian medicine from Colorado State University in 1987. In the first 11 years of his veterinarian career, he lived in New Hampshire and worked at Windham Veterinary Hospital. In 1998, he then moved to Colorado Springs where he worked at the Southern Animal Emergency Care Center, and also worked at a spay and neuter clinic in Pueblo. He took over Southmoor Veterinary Clinic nearly three years ago as owner, and still found time to write for The Gazette and Fountain Valley News as the "Ask The Vet" columnist. He was an active member of his church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He had served on a church mission to Edmonton, Alberta Canada in 1974-1976, and continued to be an active member by serving in many church positions. Rich is survived by his wife, Jerilynn; two daughters: Natalie Hollist of Seratoga, CA and Kristy Peterson (husband, Joe) of Colorado Springs; and two sons: Pfc. Ryan Hollist of Fort Hood, TX and Eric Hollist of Colorado Springs, who is currently serving a church mission in San Paulo, Brazil; a grandson, Corban Peterson, 22 months old; a brother, J. Penton Hollist (wife, Julie) of Provo, Utah, who are currently serving in a church mission in Melbourne, Australia; and a sister, Nanette Child (husband, Don) of Layton, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Ladd Hollist (who is survived by his wife, Marleen) of Oren, Utah. Viewing will take place on Friday, January 20, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Mountain View Mortuary, 2350 Montebello Square Drive, and on Saturday, January 21, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 4955 Meadowland Blvd, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Bishop Joe Miles officiating. Dr. Hollist will be greatly missed by everyone. He was one of the most caring people I knew. He took such great care of my dog Dasher and always made sure everything was going well with Dasher. Dr Hollist will be greatly missed...

Sophie, Mitzi and I want to send our sypathies to the family and friends of a very kind man. We'll sure miss him. Dr. Hollist was so very gentle and kind to my two mini dachunds. We are sad to know that he will not be able to take care of any more animals here on earth, but know that he's got his hands full in a better place.

Like so many others we were so shocked and saddened to hear of Doc Hollist's passing. We've been taking our 4 legged children to Southmoor Vet's for over 20 yrs now and Dr Hollist always showed such care with them and compassion for those we've lost through the years. We will miss him greatly.

It was truly a shock to read that Dr. Hollist had passed away. He was a very good Veterinarian to my "troublesome" german shepherd. Very gentle and understanding, and irreplaceable. My heart goes out to his family. May God be with you all.

It was such a shock to open the newspaper and find out that "Doc" had passed. For the six years he had been with Southmoor Vet Clinic he took wonderful care of my 2 cats, Patches and Gauge, and my dog Widget. Doc was there for me 3 years ago when I had to say goodbye to Patches. One year later, and after several trips to see "Doc", I was told that Guage had a serious thyroid problem. The medications didn't work, so I again had to say goodbye to one of my cherished pets. As I held Guage in my arms Doc gave him the injection and then reach over and held my hand as I cried uncontrollably. I swear I saw a tear or two before he left the room; telling me to stay for as long as I needed.

The Monday prior to Doc's passing I saw him at Walmart and said, "I'll see you at 4 o'clock; Widget has an ear infection." He laughed and we exchanged a few words together. Later that afternoon in his office he told me he had expected me to come in with one of the kittens he saw being sold in the Walmart parking lot. We laughed and I said, "you know Widget is 13 now, so I think she deserves my full attention right now." That's the way Doc was. He never forgot the history of his 4-legged patient's owners.

Dr. Hollist was a wonderful Vet, and friend to all. He will be greatly missed by many, and will surely be greeted by many as he crosses over. Farwell my friend, until we meet again...

"Rich" as we knew him, was a wonderful example for our family as a husband and a father and an inspiration as a fellow member of the LDS Church. John served with him in the Scouts for winter campouts with the boys in the Church. His wonderful voice lended "richness" to our choir. We are sorry for the void we are sure his passing will make. God be with Jerilyn, Natalie, Christy, Ryan, and Eric during this time.

It came as such a shock to read the hearbreaking news about Dr. Hollist's passing! I had just been at the clinic a few weeks prior for our dog, Daisy, to be spayed, and remember having a friendly conversation with Dr. Hollist as usual. He was such a kind, gentle, and compassionate man not only to his patients, but their owners as well. I am so sorry for your family's loss. He will be sorely missed by all, but never forgotten.

Both my husband and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Hollists' passing. Dr. Hollist was a kind, considerate, compassionate, loving man who we admired. Dr. Hollist was a giving man who shared his talent and gift with not only us as individuals for our pets but he provided training to our County 911 Dispatchers to give our customers the best service possible. We have lost a valued member of our community who will be missed by our four-legged children and us. We give thanks to God for having the opportunity to know him.

The animals (and their owners) of Fountain Valley have just suffered a great loss. Dr. Hollist was kind, compassionate, and understanding - not only to his patients but also to their often frantic human companions. As a veterinarian, he was one in a million. But as a person, Dr. Hollist was extraordinary. He will be greatly missed.

I cannot believe Dr. Hollist is gone! The first time we met him was at the emergency vets in Colorado Springs after my dog had a seizure. He was Gabe's vet for several years at the clinic and came to our home when Gabe needed to be put to sleep. I will always remember his gentle, kind ways with our pets and every time I look at Gabe's pictures I will think of Dr. Hollist. It is with a heavy heart I tell you how sorry I am for your loss. He was a wonderful man.
