Daryl Miller Obituary

Miller
Daryl Leigh Miller
November 17, 1975 - January 8, 2018
My most profound memory from boyhood in rural Pennsylvania was being outside, a gentle breeze blowing, and I was pulling a little red wagon behind me. I recall looking around at my surroundings and somehow, deep down, even at the tender age of four, I knew I was destined for bigger adventures, that I had light to share elsewhere.
After graduating from Mitchell High School in 1994, I became the first person in my family to attend college: Colorado Mesa University. While in college I met my future husband, Thomas Wilson. We both knew we were it for each other. He is the most loyal person I've ever known and always encouraged me to grow.
During and after getting my Masters in the Counseling program at UCCS, I worked in the Office of Campus Activities (2002-2007), and then at the Matrix Center (2008 - 2012), where I learned about social justice and equity, and met great activists fighting for change. While teaching for the UCCS College of Education's Student Affairs in Higher Ed Masters program, I also taught in Women's and Ethnic Studies, and in the psychology program at Pikes Peak Community College.
From 2012-2017, I taught at Walla Walla Community College in Washington state. There I received mentorship, guidance and unconditional support from world-class faculty, and was awarded tenure.
I have done my best to live my life with gratitude, and there are so many to thank in my 42 years! I hope all of you who supported me during my journey into illness this past year know what you have meant to me. I take with me the light of all of you. I leave behind my spouse, Thomas; our dog, Maynard; and the family of dear friends that we built together.
And with my little red wagon behind me, I salute you and say "I'm grateful for the experience, and now, I'm outta here!"

Daryl you shared my older brothers birthday but just different years. Life has not been the same since you left us. Your were our glue that held this family together and when you left we all went our separate ways. Your laugh was so infectious that everyone else would laugh when they heard you laugh. I miss you so much brother in law. I wish you were still here to talk to, you made it so easy to do that. Your are always in my heart and thoughts and you will never be forgotten. I lit a candle for both you and my older brother on you birthdays as well as when you passed. Life was so much better with you hear.

Daryl you were my brother in law, maybe more like a brother to me. It's been shy of the three years that you have been gone. I still think of you each and everyday. I miss your laugh, your compassion and having you just being a part of the family. You did so much for us. You grounded us and now the it has all been up rooted. I wish you were here to talk to, to make me laugh, to be just who you were. Our lives and the world hasn't been the same without you. It just hasn't. You were the glue that held us all together and making things right when they were so wrong. My heart still breaks knowing that you are gone. But I know your free of pain, free to pull your little red wagon where ever you go, but most of all being whole again. I love you Daryl and miss you so much. I know your another angel around the thrown with God tonight.

I'm not sure I have the words to describe what a force Daryl was and how his light shone through no matter if you spoke with him for an hour or one minute. What he accomplished in his life serves as a real inspiration and I'm so happy to have known him. Sending my condolences and love to Thomas and Daryl's family. He is already so missed.

Daryl was laughter, plain and simple... He was one of the liveliest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. He was such an inspiration to me and to the people around us. You could see how he affected those with whom he came into contact, how he changed peoples lives. His tireless humor and his dedication to social justice work made him an example to live up to. My heart goes out to his spouse Thomas, Daryl's other family members and his friends. He will be missed.

I worked at WWCC with Daryl for almost two years. The bright spot in my day came when he stopped by to visit. I remember scheduling his student evaluation and told him I would be in the last 10 minutes of class and he said "No, please come from start to finish." I had never done that but that class changed the way i viewed the topic he was teaching that day. I loved the way his eyes lit up when I brought him those special chocolates back from Arizona. He will be greatly missed by many.

My life is better because of this man. Daryl, you brought joy and laughter, love and happiness and I'm honored to have known you. WWCC shined brighter and was more alive while you were here. Going to miss you my friend.

When you shine a light of such intense love and joy, your memory is held by many. I'm SO jealous of where you are! I've more to do, but will one day join you, and Stanzi. Thanks for being the beautiful you I came to know here! Whoo Hoo! Love, Becky

My heart is aching for everyone who knew and loved Daryl. Put simply, Daryl was pure fun. I will never forget one evening in particular where Daryl, Chris B., and I hung out late night after a mutual friend's wedding. I didn't know Daryl well at that time, but the three of us laughed nonstop for hours. I remember not wanting the night to end. His positive energy, openness, and joviality was contagious, and my wife and I were always excited to see him. Daryl, we will miss you and will do our best to exude your brightness in our own lives.

To my dear brother in law. I knew you were special from the beginning. Your compassion, strength, motivation and your laugh. You would light up the room when you walked in. The love you and my brother shared was once in a life time. I was so glad that you found each other. Our family was better when you were here with us. We love you so much and even though our hearts are breaking in two you will always be in our hearts. Daryl you are now on a new adventure and I know Heaven is lucky to have a new angel like you as we were here on earth. Rest in Peace and we will see you again.
Love the Wilson family.
