Robert Malcolm Sapp, Sr.—born September 11, 1950, in Fort Lewis, WA, to Arthur Q. and Barbara M. Sapp—passed away at home on January 9, 2026, due to medical complications. Robert graduated from Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs, CO in 1969. Served in the Army from 1969-1972, completing a tour in Vietnam, where he was exposed to Agent Orange.
In March 1973, Robert joined the Colorado Springs Police Department where he earned multiple awards and became the first African American police sergeant in the department's history. He medically retired in 1999.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jeanine; and son, Ishmael. He is survived by his children, Adam, Robert Jr., Julian, Dawnielle, and Caleb; his sister, Audrey (James) Evans; his brothers, Arthur (Helen) Sapp, and Jeffrey (Shannon) Sapp.
Celebration of Life Service at 2:00 p.m. on February 17th, 2026, at Calvary United Methodist Church, 4210 Austin Bluffs Parkway, Colorado Springs, CO 80918
In lieu of flowers the family requests you send donations, in Robert's name, to the Colorado Horse Rescue Network, in Rush Colorado.
