Dean Allen Mabe, 75, of Colorado Springs, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, surrounded by family. An artist, cowboy, land steward, and avid angler, Dean lived a life deeply rooted in Colorado's landscapes and traditions.
Born October 19, 1950, to Milton and Marion Mabe, Dean was a third-generation Coloradan rancher who grew up north of Colorado Springs. His early years on horseback forged a lifelong bond with the land that later found expression in his art—quiet, soulful landscapes inspired by ranch life, wilderness, and countless sunsets.
Dean graduated from Air Academy High School and studied civil engineering at the University of Southern Colorado. He built a distinguished career in land planning, shaping much of Colorado Springs' development over five decades, including Rockrimmon, Holland Park, and East Vail. He also served on numerous civic boards and committees and successfully ran an award-winning advertising firm. Creativity and service defined every chapter of his professional life.
After the tragic death of his first wife, Lana, Dean raised his daughter, Melissa, on his own for ten years. He later married Renee', his wife of 37 years, and returned to ranch life at Windance Ranch in Del Norte, where he focused on art and family. His paintings were exhibited widely across the United States and are held in public and private collections.
Dean and Renee' returned to the Colorado Springs area in 2001. Until his final days, Dean could often be found fly fishing, forever grateful for time spent along a good river.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Lana. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Renee' Mabe; his daughter, Melissa Marcott Mabe (Raj Chivukula); stepchildren Anthony Costa (Jerri), John Costa (Kelli), Shaunna Souther (Ken), and Aaron Huffmaster (Jody); grandchildren Lily Marcott and William Lochlan Sabanosh; step-grandchildren Mya Austin, Calleigh Heo, Emery Huffmaster, Alex Costa, Mikenzie Costa, and Garrett Costa; his brother, Jessie Mabe (Marion); and many extended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trout Unlimited. A private celebration of life will be held with family and friends.
