It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, Douglas K. Mason (Doug) February 6, 2022, at the age of 73, due to complications from a fall he suffered in October.
Doug was born July 7, 1948 in Parsons, Kansas to Thomas E. Mason, Jr. and Thelma (Hornback) Mason. He and his family moved to Colorado Springs soon after he was born, where he spent the rest of his life. Doug attended Stratton Elementary School, Horace Mann Junior High, and Wasson High School, graduating in 1966. After graduation, he attended colleges in Pueblo and Colorado Springs, coming close to getting his degree.
Doug was married for a brief time in the late 60's; his only child, Jeremy, was born in 1969. He worked a variety of jobs throughout his life, including managing a liquor store and working in a business office.
Doug was a bachelor for most of his life, and his life was filled with happy times. He was proud that years after high school graduation, he still had meaningful relationships with some of his classmates. He was on several reunion planning committees and truly enjoyed going to each reunion. He spent many happy times celebrating birthdays and holidays with his son, parents, siblings/spouses and nieces and nephews.
In his early thirties, Doug became interested in stained glass. He soon developed into a truly talented artist and created a variety of stained-glass masterpieces. He gave pieces of his beautiful work to each of us and today they are proudly displayed. His parents asked him to make them a set of four, 4-ft. stained-glass panels for the master bathroom in their 1984 dream house! His gorgeous stained glass panels were the focal point of their bathroom…truly something one would see in a "Better Homes and Gardens" magazine. After his parents' passing, he proudly displayed them in his home.
Camping was one of Doug's favorite past times in his earlier years. A particularly memorable moment occurred on a trip to Powderhorn with his sister, Debbie, his brother, Terry, his son Jeremy and Doug's friend Jack Crofts. At the top of the last ravine, Doug insisted on leading the others down. With backpack overloaded with way too many pans, etc., he headed down the steep slope, while the others waited behind. Suddenly the clanging of pans echoed throughout the canyon, with Doug tumbling in "Doug fashion" down the mountainside! After picking himself up and dusting himself off, he slowly turned around and hollered back, "Take your backpacks off!" Many more memorable trips to Powderhorn took place, but when it became too difficult to hike into this campsite, he graduated to less physically-exerting camping where he could get an all-over suntan while lounging in the natural mountain springs!
Who knew this burley mountain man would take an interest in growing beautiful flowers in his garden. Each spring he would invite us all over to see his lovely gladiolas in all their beauty…with several marijuana plants tucked in "for good measure".
One of the highlights of the last few years for him was adding a master bedroom/bathroom to his home. Doug was 100% involved in the remodel…his dad would have been proud! He even posted daily pictures on FB so we could track the progress. Once completed, it was something to behold!
During the last few years, Doug shared his home and life with two CA girls, Wanda Cerrillo and her daughter, Jordan. Doug considered Jordan to be his own daughter. There were many happy times between the three of them, riding the cog train up Pikes Peak and several side trips to Cripple Creek and Rocky Mountain National Park. We thank Wanda for the good care she gave Doug during the last few months of his life.
Being a proud "Trumpster" and patriot, Doug wore his Trump shirts and hats proudly. A few of us fellow Trumpsters are going to miss our Trump talks with him and sending him Trump articles! We're positive that the Trump organization is already feeling his loss.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Thelma Mason, and his dog, Poco. He is survived by his partner, Wanda, and "daughter" Jordan; his son, Jeremy; his sisters, Sue Mason, Sheri (Jim) Metzger, and Debbie Mason (Linda Howe); his brother, Terry (Sue) Mason; his dog, Doc; and nephews Michael (Robin) and Brian Metzger; Geoffrey (Mike Griffith) Mason; and niece Jessica Mason, as well as several great nieces and nephews.
At Doug's request, there will be no memorial service.
Doug, we love you and will miss you! We will remember your wonderful sense of humor, your awesome creative talents, and all the FUN times we had with you! We will never forget you! Until we meet again!
