Dow Finsterwald Obituary

Dow Henry
Finsterwald
September 6, 1929
November 5, 2022

Dow Finsterwald - beloved father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and legendary professional golfer - died on November 5, 2022 at his home.
His professional accolades are exceptional and second only to his contributions to the game, its players, its rules, and tournament charitable partnerships. His pride is the legacy of his family and their exceptional lives.
Finsterwald was born on September 6, 1929 in Athens, Ohio. He got his start in golf at Athens Country Club. Beginning in 1944, Dow worked after school and on weekends, sweeping the locker room, hosing down the showers, and opening the club each morning. His goal was to earn World Series tickets. "My father said if you do a good job and save your money, you can go to the World Series." Finsterwald was an avid baseball fan who kept box scores of the Cincinnati Reds. "It came September and instead of World Series tickets, I bought a set of MacGregor golf clubs. You might say baseball got me into golf."
Finsterwald had twelve tour victories and was named PGA Player of the Year in 1958. He also won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average in 1957.
Dow played on four U.S. Ryder Cup teams (1957, '59, '61 and '63) and was the non-playing captain of the victorious 1977 team.
Finsterwald was inducted into the Professional Golfers' Association Hall of Fame in 2006. In his day, winning a major meant being approached by some of the top courses in the nation as a club professional. In 1963, he left the Tour to raise a family and became the Director of Golf at the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado, a position he held for twenty-eight years.
Finsterwald always kept active in the professional game. He was a vice president of the Professional Golfers' Association (1976-1978), a member of the United States Golf Association executive committee (1977-1979), and served as a rules official at the Masters beginning in 1978.
Finsterwald was honored by inductions to the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame, a Jack Nicklaus Memorial Honoree (2007), and for his lifetime contributions, the El Pomar Foundation Award of Excellence.
Dow Finsterwald was always a fierce advocate for golf and its role and ability to create event partnerships with charities to ensure that there was a way for tournaments to benefit those outside the game. He never failed to recognize the events and the role of the PGA in "Giving Back".
He was a strong promoter of the First Tee in Colorado, an organization introducing and supporting golf for kids and teens who might otherwise miss the opportunity.
At his winter home in Bay Hill, he and his wife, Linda, maintained an active involvement in fund-raising with the Jensen Beach Hibiscus Children's Center golf tournament for twenty-four years.
Throughout the 1970s to 1990s, Dow worked behind the scenes, helping Colorado land the 1978 United States Open, the 1985 Professional Golfers' Association Championship, the 1993 Senior Open and the 1995 United States Women's Open. He has continued over the decades to lend his special touch to bring the highest-level events to Colorado.
He maintained roots in Athens, Ohio and through the Dow and Linda Finsterwald Sports Management Scholarship at Ohio University, in partnership with the Kerr family, supported the development of students wanting to intern with the Professional Golfers' Association Tour.
Dow Finsterwald believed in work ethic, integrity, and commitment to family. He exemplified this in the day-to-day values he instilled at the Broadmoor Golf Club, requiring the highest-level etiquette and adherence to golf courtesies beyond the tee box. He created values still respected today at one of the most highly respected resorts in the nation.
His work ethic and commitment to integrity continue through Finsterwald generations of outstanding athletes and business professionals who work hard, continue to place family first and believe in active involvement in community.
Dow Finsterwald is preceded by his wife of sixty-three years, Linda Pedigo Finsterwald; and his son, Michael.
He is survived by his sons, John Edward, Dow Henry Finsterwald II, and Russell Edwin Finsterwald; his daughter, Jane Ellan Finsterwald; his grandchildren, Michael, Katy Ann, Tres Dow III, Russell, and James; and six great-grandchildren.
In respect, and in lieu of flowers, contributions to the Dow and Linda Finsterwald Sports Management Scholarship can be made through Ohio University at give.ohio.edu/funds (search for: The Dow and Linda Finsterwald Sports Management Scholarship.)

I hope some of the family sees this. I was unaware of Dow´s passing until today.
I was with the Golf Channel from its founding as Vice President of Information Technology. I was a member of Bay Hill for fifteen years. During that time I had the privilege of getting to know Dow. I played in the Shootout with him many times.
I loved playing or just being around him. I always admired his dedication to golf and his willingness to help others play better. He helped me many times, especially with my short game.
I left Bay Hill in 2010 and moved back to my home in Oneonta, Alabama. I haven´t seen Dow since then.
I feel sure that Dow had a good life. It´s sad to think of him gone but I think we all can find comfort in the fact that he was loved and respected by lots of people.
I offer my sincere condolences.

I had the pleasure to meet with Mr. Finsterwald on two occasions some 30 years part at his beloved Broadmoor Golf Club.
The time difference in those meetings validated his lifelong reputation as a gentleman and his graciousness.

What an amazing man. I had the opportunity to play 18 with him at Shinnecock in the late 90s. What a pleasure. I think he was 70 then and shot 73. He was so nice and a caring individual. That will always be my greatest golf memory. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was so sorry to hear of Dow's passing. My Father always spoke very kindly of him and enjoyed their friendship on and off the golf course. I know he met Dow at the gate with a smile. Godspeed.

It was an honor to be at your side sir as your caddie and friend for many years. You taught me lessons on the golf course and in life, following in your footsteps. All but very few can touch the lives of others, I am that one who is externally grateful for above all, your friendship. I'm sure our Lord has welcomed you into his kingdom, where I hope we shall reunite.

Dow was one of the finest gentlemen you will meet. He personified Professional golf at its highest level. Dow and his contemporaries in the Colorado Section (almost all of them in the Colorado golf Hall of Fame) established the highbar for promoting the game, representing the game for all of its values and especially helping to promote golf in Colorado. We should all aspire to reach for higher levels as he did to accomplish our goals of growing the game we love!

My dad and Dow´s officiated together and our families and Dow´s were lifelong friends. All Bobcats and Betas. Dow was the ultimate gentleman and professional. I will miss our brief visits with this very special man. He lived at Bay Hill and in Colorado Springs but I believe his heart was always in Athens, Ohio.

I remember meeting Mr. Finsterwald for the first time. He was so gracious and helpful and gave me a lot of his time. My uncle worked under him at the Broadmoor for years and my uncle always had extremely nice things to say about his time working under Dow and had many fantastic stories. He will be greatly missed!

from the family of Frank B. Gullum, I. As the grandson, my/our memory of Dow Finsterwald was his and Dan Galbraith's coming to Athens for my grandfather's funeral in 1964. The realization that my grandfather was something more than just a grandfather, left a lasting memory. Thanks, Dow. Rest in Peace!
