Edith Irene Holcomb was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Rome, Ohio and was the daughter of Joseph and Bessie (Smith) Kemmer.

Edith died peacefully surrounded by her children on May 25th at her home where she lived for the past 51 years. Waiting to greet her and continue their journey together, was her soul mate of 65 years, Robert (Bob) Charles Holcomb. Bob and Edith were married on Aug. 10, 1941, in Napoleon Ohio. Bob preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 2006.

From this marriage Edith was blessed with a son Robert Charles Holcomb II, 3 daughters, Carol Ann Maupin, Connie Sue Snider (Ray), Paula Jo Meyer (Kevin), 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

A few of Edith's passions that continued late into her 80's was bowling, following the Denver Broncos and Denver Nuggets. Edith was an accomplished bowler who was a Colorado 1959 Doubles State champion and a Queen's tournament champion.

Edith never met a stranger. Every person was just a friend she hadn't met yet. Edith, with Bob's support, opened her home and welcomed many friends and families who needed a place to temporarily call home. Edith and Bob's kindness and generosity will always be remembered.

Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, William "Gayle" Kemmer and one sister, Margaret Jane Krieg. Edith and her sister were very close in life. Both lived to be 98 years old, but Edith outlived Margaret, living 98 years 7 months and 30 days, exactly 4 days longer.

We would like to thank the staff of Interim Hospice in assisting us with the compassionate care Edith received for these past 6 months.

An open house to celebrate her life will be held on June 26, from 2 - 5 at the home of her daughter, Carol Maupin. All friends and family are welcome.

Edith, Bob and their kids played a memorable part in my childhood. We traveled Europe with the Holcombs, singing “Found A Peanut” loudly (and annoyingly) in the back seat. Border crossings could be a nightmare as border patrol would try to sort out which kids belonged to which family. Once we all moved back to Colorado the family gatherings continued and many terrific times were had at Camp Hale with Lucy Wallace/family frequently joining in. Edith made the VERY BEST chili, and I can still visualize the heavy cast iron pot she used to make it. My mother, Evelyn, bowled with Edith and considered Edith her lifelong best friend. Edith will be sorely missed by us all. She was one of the very best!

I arrived in Colorado Springs in 1964 and quickly got into the bowling scene where I met and became friends with Edith. Her husband, Bob had just retired from the Air Force and my husband was serving in it. Edith was a great bowler and a great friend. How wonderful it was for her to live almost 100 years. My condolences to the family.
