Elsie Maria Madrid Gomez died at her home on June 28, 2023, at the age of 91.
Elsie was the youngest daughter of Fabian Madrid and Josefa Gallegos Madrid. She was born in Chama, New Mexico and graduated from Chama High School. Her beloved sisters, who are all now deceased, were Frances Martinez, Genoveva Suazo, Bessie Maestas, Rosana Gonzales, Vera Alcon, Cora Trujillo, and her step-sisters Juanita Ulibarri and Reyecita Romero.
Elsie met her husband, Elfego Gomez Jr. in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and they were married there at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on December 13, 1954. During her twenty years as an Army wife, Elsie lived in Texas, Panama, California, New Mexico, Germany, Illinois and finally settled in Colorado Springs. When her husband retired from the Army, they worked together as co-owners of Barberio Cheese house in the Citadel Mall from 1972-1979. After retirement from Barberio's, they traveled to many countries in Europe and South America. Elsie and Elfego enjoyed sixty-three years of marriage until Elfego's death in July 2018.
Elsie was devoted to her two children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Antoinette (Sommer) Gomez and Elfego Gomez III; grandchildren, Joshua Sommer, Emily (Kevin) Gonyer, Alejandro (Hillary) Gomez, and Dominique (Mark Wittman) Gomez; and great-grandchildren, Andros, Keegan, Ethan, Rowan, Leia, Ida and Dolores. In addition, she loved her many nieces and nephews dearly, and she enjoyed visiting with them throughout the years.
During the years 1963-2007, Elsie belonged to many bowling leagues in Illinois and in Colorado Springs. She enjoyed bowling in City, State and National tournaments, and a highlight was bowling in Pro-Am tournaments in Las Vegas.
Elsie was a devout Catholic throughout her life. In Colorado Springs, she was a member of Sacred Heart, Holy Family, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and finally St. Joseph's Parish. Along with friends, she created and participated in a Spanish speaking Rosary group for many years.

Elsie n Elfego were my godparents. My dad Jose Garcia n mom Antonia were best friends for many years. I have been thinking about Elsie for years. My dad is buried close to them at the national cemetery! I heard many a story about their adventures in Germany and Elfego was present at my dad´s funeral 10 years ago and I was able to see her when Elfego passed . Elsie passed a couple months after my mom and I´m sure they are still laughing about the times they had together. My mom and I would visit Elfegos grave site many times and she´d tell me the stories of the fun they had. What a friendship they had ! Blessings to the family !

Elsie was a sweet and loving friend and neighbor. She was alot of fun and even got up to dance to Santana at age 90. She was a lover of plants which she shared with family and friends. She loved playing board games with friends. She enjoyed showing the pictures of her family, especially her grandkids. I always enjoyed her company and I will always miss her. Condolences to her family.
