Esther Geoffrey Obituary

Esther Geoffrey was a dancer who performed in Broadway musicals and operettas in New York City during the 1940's. While performing, she received formal training in ballet with instructors who had trained and danced with the Bolshoi Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, and with Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes. She served as the first Treasurer for the American Dance Guild in its Brooklyn, NY chapter. She taught dance in New York City and, for 36 years, taught in the Colorado College Children's and Laymen's Dance Program. She taught all levels of ballet, jazz, modern and children's creative dance classes. A number of her students went on to become principal dancers with major ballet companies, but she also took great pleasure in bringing movement and dance into the lives of those who did not go on to professional careers. Summers, she worked with Hanya Holm at Colorado College and taught ballet to Broadmoor ice skaters, including Olympic gold medalist Peggy Fleming and others. Mrs. Geoffrey founded the Children's Dance Theater supported by Colorado College and the Performing Arts for Youth Organization. She choreographed the programs which were geared to a children's audience. Students from various school districts were bussed to Armstrong Theater on the CC campus to view performances. Mrs. Geoffrey was Artistic Consultant to the Colorado Springs Dance Theater (CSDT) for many years. In this role, she helped bring to Colorado Springs premier dance companies from New York and around the world. The annual Esther Geoffrey Young Dancers Scholarship Award is sponsored by the CSDT. An avid student of world history and politics, she completed her Bachelors Degree in History in her mid-40's and in her 50's completed her thesis, "Toward a Theory of the Avant Garde in Dance," to obtain a Masters Degree from the University of Colorado. Mrs. Geoffrey died on March 10. She was 85 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Geoffrey, in 1971. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Ennis of San Rafael, CA, and her son, Dr. Russell Geoffrey of Princeton, NJ., and 5 grandchildren. She is dearly beloved and missed by her family and friends. A Celebration of Life Reception will be held in her honor on Sunday, March 28th, at 2 pm in the Remington Room at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort, 3225 Broadmoor Valley Rd. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to: The Esther Geoffrey Young Dancers Award Competition, Colorado Springs Dance Theater, PO Box 877, Colorado Springs, CO 80901; The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), which provides translations of Middle East media and informs Western media about sites on the Internet used by terrorist organizations to spread their extremist message: PO Box 27837, Washington, DC 20038, (202) 955-9070; and The GESHER Foundation, an organization that promotes mutual understanding, respect, and tolerance among Israelis of all walks of life: 520 Eighth Ave, 15th floor, New York, NY 10018 (646)472-5380.

I rented a room from Esther for 6 years in Colorado Springs from 1993-1999. Those sure were good memories living where I loved to live. I lived there in grade school too when Dad was in the Air Force and when I was only in grade school. Sure miss the people I was so thankful to meet back then. RIP Esther and thank you for some of the best memories I ever made while living there on Tejon Street in the 90's.

Esther was my landlord and some of my best memories were living there in the 90's. 1993 to 1999. I also lived there in grade school in the 60's when my Dad was in the Air Force. I sure do miss it. I would give Esther a ride to the Airport when she needed it and have lot's of good memories that I am sure fond of while living there.. R.I.P.

Esther was truly a motivating and remarkable woman that I was blessed to have known her when my daughter and I took her ballet class years ago. I enjoyed seeing Esther each time I would come to Colorado Springs from Maine where I now live that I’m saddened not to be able to see her again since I recently am here to visit for a while. Esther shall be greatly missed yet I shall have fond memories of this truly inspirational friend and teacher for many years to come. My heartfelt prayers are with her family and may God’s peace be with them.

Esther was a wonderfully vivacious teacher---never shy about expressing her thoughts on my dancing and other adults who enjoyed her classes! She had remarkable insight on life, the arts, politics, etc. Her enthusiasm and great energy for Colorado Springs Dance Theatre, a grassroots organization, were so appreciated over the years. As I walk by her house each day, I think of her there in her kitchen window reading newspapers, talking to her family and friends, rising above the circumstances of her last months---a beautiful person---missed greatly.

My favorite memory of dancing with Esther in the early 70s is of a wild jazz dance about NY City nightlife. She loved NY and taught me to dance like a sly tricky gangster, following her around while she cavorted sexily on stage. She never flinched in expecting the best from everyone, including audiences. Recently she walked for blocks, even when she was in pain. I carry her inspiration with me daily.
Love and gratitude,

My dear Esther -

You taught me how to express my soul through my body,
to step forward without fear,
to take over my space in this world when no one makes room
to breath and jump and laugh, and to live and love without regret.
You will be so missed.

With the deepest gratitude, respect, and love,

Leanne

Esther was my ballet teacher for over five years at Colorado College. Not only was she my teacher, but became a close mentor and friend. I have stayed in touch with her for over 30 years and am so saddened that I was not able to see her in the last few years with our long distance between us. I love her and I know her legacy with dance and all the other organizations she took part of and created, will live on. This world has more beauty and life in it because of her work and love for dance and the arts and humanity.
