Frank Sanborn Obituary

Frank J. Sanborn, 78, passed away on August 27th, shortly after being diagnosed with Lymphoma. Frank was born at Penrose (Glockner) hospital in Colorado Springs, May 18, 1935 along with his twin brother Nick. Raised in Cascade, he graduated from Manitou Springs High School.

After high school Frank and Nick spent some time in the mid-50s working for the Ford racing team based in Long Beach, CA with the Unsers; Bobby, Al, Jerry and Louis. After a brief stint in the Army, Frank settled back in Cascade, CO where he spent nearly twenty years working on the Pikes Peak Highway as a Patrolman and head of the road crew. He subsequently became a general contractor and always built things with skill and pride. He and his brother Nick both competed in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Frank generally built two race cars, one for his brother and one for himself or a promising rookie. The Sanborn collaboration of Frank's mechanical skills and Nick's driving skills resulted in five wins in the stock car division for Nick. Frank continued to be an avid race fan of the Hill Climb, Indy and NASCAR.

Frank was proud of being a charter member of the Cascade Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Chief for a number of years. He was also on the Ski Patrol at the Pikes Peak Ski Area. He was a member of the "Over the Hill Gang" (Pikes Peak Hill Climb Historical Association).

Frank was preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine and Vera, and by his twin brother Nick.

He is survived by his sister Rosemary Quinn, son Don (Sharon), daughter Laurie and grandson Fletcher along with many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Cascade Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 366, Cascade, CO 80809.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 4 at 10 AM. Location: Church in the Wildwood, 10585 Ute Pass Ave, Green Mountain Falls, CO.

Frank, you were always our favorite neighbor while we lived in Woodland Park. Fortunately, we were able to see you one last time a year ago before we moved. We'll miss your jokes, laughter and the fun times we shared.

Frank , you were always so kind to me and my family. I remember when you helped Nick with his 1st pinewood derby. Your legacy of quality and pride is evidenced by the shelves in our basement. We love you - rest with God

I loved Frank. He was always so happy and full of life. I only met and visited often with Frank in the last two years, but his hillclimb roots made him a celebrity I had known OF most of my life. I loved hearing all his hillclimb stories and how it was Frank who forced the postponement (with the Waldo Canyon fire raging) via the PTB for the hillclimb in 2012. Frank knew our beautiful mountains could not be risked with possible sparks last fire season. Way to Go, Frank!

I loved talking with Frank, seeing his scrapbooks and photos, and he enjoyed sharing his stories with these new ears, I am sure. His pup, Nicki, was a joy to him and we'd always compare our yellow labs at Mo's when we'd see each other with the dogs in tow.

I was genuinely overwhelmed with the word of his passing and will always remember him very fondly. Frank, you were a real sweetheart and I'll miss getting to know you better.

Sanborn family, I am sorry to hear of your loss. When I was growing up, a sure sign of spring was hearing Frank and Nick working on the race car. I expect they are roaring through the heavens now. God Bless.

I was saddened to hear of Franks Passing. As teenager I loved to be up at Devils play ground and watch the boys come roaring up the Hill. What a great racing team. I lived just down the road in Chipita and dreamed of being like them. They were an inspiration to many of us kids. Frank you will be miss by many.

Was a surprise and kind of shock to hear that Frank had died. There are many memories I have of him, to picking me up on the toll road after a hike to teasing me until I turn red...which was usually just a few words. His laugh and smile were one of a kind. Condolences to all of the family, he will be missed.
