George Simonton Obituary

July 17, 1916-March 28, 2006. George E. Simonton, age 89, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1967 and formerly of Denver passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at a local care center. He was a retired insurance broker. George was born on July 17, 1916 in Denver to Lee Hamilton and Grace(McDonald) Simonton. He graduated from East High School in Denver in 1934 and from Purdue University in 1938 where he received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He entered the Air Force in 1942 and was a flight engineer and co-pilot during WWII. He was honorably discharged as a Captain in 1946. Mr. Simonton married Marilyn Lois Ewoldt on December 7, 1941 in Las Vegas, NV. His loving wife passed away on March 15, 1993. George started his career with Fireman's Fund in Albuquerque in 1946 and subsequently partnered in six insurance companies including Padgett Simonton Insurance in Colorado Springs. He retired in 1985. He was a member of the Vestry at Grace Church, The Colorado Springs Rotary Club, the El Paso Club, and the Colorado Insurance Association. He was an avid fly fisherman and golfer. He is survived by his daughters: Sandra (husband, Jerome) Knoll and Cynthia Warnke, both of Colorado Springs; and his son: Skip (wife, Liz) Simonton of Colorado Springs. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Timothy (wife, Marcia) Yrisarri, Reid Simonton, Leslie Simonton, Marc Simonton, KC Warnke and Mari Lyn Warnke. He has also a great-granddaughter: Emma Yrisarri. His parents, his wife and a brother, Walter, preceded George in death. A visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2006 at the Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at Grace Episcopal Church, 601 N. Tejon Street, Colorado Springs. A luncheon reception will follow the services at the church in the Great Hall. Private entombment will be at the Shrine of Remembrance Chapel Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
