Gordon Hinds Obituary

After almost 96 years of life, Gordon Hinds died peacefully on September 18, 2016.

He was born on September 22, 1920, to Claude L. Hinds and Audrey Bizzle Hinds, in Macomb, Oklahoma. In 1936, his father brought him to Pueblo, Colorado, where he graduated from Centennial High School and Pueblo Junior College. He continued his education at the University of Colorado.

Despite a lifelong hearing impairment, Gordon served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Following the war, he returned to the University of Colorado and graduated from the School of Law in 1948.

Married in 1942 to Mary Dolores Lash, of Pueblo, Gordon fathered two daughters. After law school, the family returned to Pueblo, where Gordon began his law practice.

He spent almost all his professional career in public service. He was appointed to fill an unexpired term as Justice of the Peace in Pueblo, and was re-elected in his own right for two additional terms, prior to his appointment as Pueblo's City Attorney in 1954. He served in that position until 1971, when he was appointed as the City Attorney of Colorado Springs.

In 1972, he married Vi Marie Weber, with whom he enjoyed 24 years before her death in 1996. After his retirement from the City, Gordon and Vi enjoyed numerous trips, both in the U.S. and abroad. Both were active in community service.

During his retirement, Gordon revived his college fascination with acting and performed regularly in theaters across Colorado Springs. He delighted in playing clergymen and anything Shakespearean, and eagerly attacked any role, small or large. His last stage performance, in 2009, was, presciently, as Dead Man in the Cemetery in the Theatreworks production of "Our Town."

He attended theater extensively, in Colorado Springs, Denver, and throughout the country, Canada, and England. He was a devotee of classical music, and took particular joy in the Colorado College Summer Music Festival and KCME. A lifelong reader, he consumed fiction, history, biography, essays, and poetry until his failing eyesight would no longer permit him this essential pleasure.

Gordon is survived by daughters Leslie C. Robinson (Elgin, IL) and Kristin G. Hinds (Colorado Springs); grandsons Patrick T. Stokes (Loveland, CO) and Andrew G. Stokes (Lafayette, CO); and great-grandson Sebastian Stokes.

The family is infinitely grateful to Pikes Peak Hospice for helping to make Gordon's last months comfortable and peaceful.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Throughout his adult life (particularly after his marriage to Vi), Gordon believed strongly in giving back to the community. Some of his regular charitable contributions included the CC Music Festival, Special Olympics, Cheyenne Village, ACLU, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and many more.

Friends wishing to commemorate Gordon's life are urged to contribute to one of these or any other worthy organization that works to make the world a better place.

Such a sweet man. I still have an Iguana necklace that he gave me when we were in Night of the Iguana together He was brilliant in it. Every play we did together was a pleasure. I'm sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful man .

Gordon seems to have really lived life fully and was a delightful addition to our Denver play group when he joined us for coffee after the play and entertained us with his knowledge and love of the theatre! As we start a new season, he will be missed.

Gordon was the perfect storyteller of Shakespeare. He and Kristin would come to Judy's house for dinner before a Shakespeare Festival performance in Boulder and thrill us all with the intelligent and well acted tale of that evening's play, complete with the history of Shakespeare's era, before we went to the show. I so appreciated our conversations. He will be sorely missed but I can hear him now giving a master class to the angels.
