Irving Schwartz Obituary

Irving Schwartz, 92, passed away in Colorado Springs, CO. He was born in New York City to Isidor and Gussie Schwartz, both deceased. His wife, Shirley, and his sister, Rose Franck, also preceded him in death. Mr. Schwartz is survived by his beloved children, Steven, Lisa and Lori, and their families. Mr. Schwartz, a veteran of World War II, served in the Army Air Corps, both in the United States and overseas, from January 1942 until December 1945. Mr. Schwartz was a member of Silver State Masonic Lodge, Pueblo, CO, for more than 64 years. Mr. Schwartz concluded his long and distinguished career at the Pueblo Army Depot in 1977, where he served for many years as the Depot's Civilian Personnel Officer. He also served as a member of both the Governor's and the Mayor's Committee for the Employment of the Handicapped. Mr. Schwartz was a member of the United Hebrew Center in Pueblo, CO. He was a life-long fan of the New York Yankees, and delighted in telling stories of watching Babe Ruth play and shaking his hand as a child. He also loved jazz, and took great joy in having seen his favorites, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald, many times at the Apollo Theater in Harlem when they were still "amateurs." He was a kind and generous man with a smile that would light up the room and invite you into his heart. Graveside services were held at the B'nai Jacob Cemetery, 23rd and Montezuma in Pueblo, CO on Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 at 2p.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory may kindly donate to the Southern Poverty Law Center (www.splcenter.org), an organization he long supported. The family would like to thank the staff at Evercare Hospice for their compassionate care. Online condolences, www.adrian-comer.com. Arrangements, Adrian Comer Funeral Home.

Steve, Lisa and Lori, when I saw the return address I knew what was inside the envelope. Irv was a kind and gentle soul. I was so honored when he came to my wedding, and we had kept in touch even after my Mom died. I believe all the Civilian Personnel employees from that era have passed. They were truly part of the greatest generation. I will remember him fondly.

I did not personally know him but he sounded like a wonderful and loving person.

Lori & Lisa, Even though I didn't know your father personally, the way you talked about him enabled me to get a good handle on what a wonderful man he was. I know you miss him dearly, and he was lucky to have two daughters as caring as you. He's at peace.

I was honored to be a pall bearer for Irving. I was always welcome in his home. His smile was intoxicating, his demeanor a delight, and his devotion to family an example we should all live by. God bless him.

Lori, Lisa, Emily and David - It was a pleasure knowing Irving, though it was for such a short time. I'll remember his wonderful hospitality the weekend I spent at his Estes Park home. He was a kind and sweet man and will be missed.
