Jack Barnes Obituary

BARNES

Jack Duane Barnes

1930-2016

Jack (JD) Barnes passed away on September 10, 2016 in Green Valley, Arizona. He was born on June 25, 1930 in Kiowa County Kansas.

JD's family lived in Baca County, Colorado when he was a toddler, enduring the first wave of the High Plains dust storms in the 1930's. They moved to Vineland, Colorado to escape the Dust Bowl. He graduated from Vineland High School, earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Colorado, and eventually a Ph.D in theater history from the University of Denver. He was very proud of completing all his education in his home state of Colorado, starting in his

one-room schoolhouse and finishing with his Ph.D.

JD served in the 224th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry

Division in Korea (1952-1954). After the war he taught in Sterling and Morrison, Illinois (1954-1959). Early in those years he met Lorene Caudell at a Colorado University square dance and they married on August 11, 1955. Scott and Amy joined the family in the early 1960s.

In 1969 the family moved to Cairo, Egypt for two years. JD

directed productions at the American University of Cairo as head of the Drama Department. Back in Colorado Springs he taught English and drama for over 30 years, all the while

cultivating a passion for the plays of William Shakespeare. JD and Lorene travelled extensively in the US, Europe, Middle East, Japan, and Panama, including group trips with close friends.

JD was very active in the community and First United

Methodist Church, Colorado Springs. He and Lorene were among the founding members of the Berean Sunday School class organized in the early 1960s and still active today. JD served on many committees including: Colorado Drama Speech Association (later ACT), Colorado Language Arts

Society, State Speech Tournament Committee, Colorado Springs Education Association, and the NEA where he served as a national delegate for several years.

In 2004 JD and Lorene moved to Green Valley, Arizona and joined the Methodist Church there. JD sang in the church choir, was active in the men's group, and eagerly participated in church activities. He sang with the Just For Fun Singers, which entertained nursing home residents.

JD is survived by his wife Lorene Barnes, children Scott K. Barnes and Amy C. Barnes, sister June Broce, brother Larry Barnes, granddaughters Caitlin and Bronwyn, a great-granddaughter, and multiple nieces and nephews.

A service in his memory will be held at 2 pm on Friday,

November 4 at First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs.

I took Dr. Barnes' class in 1980-81 as a senior who moved from Brooklyn, NY, to Colorado Springs--a tough year for me. Dr. Barnes raised the bar when it came to English class. That class was a building block for me to go on to Columbia University for a master's in linguistics. Teachers are critical to our development and, in my opinion, never get the credit they deserve. Dr. Barnes influenced my education positively and I am sure he did that for many others.

39 years ago, Scott introduced me to his father, Dr. Barnes, who encouraged me to study literature, so I majored in English in college. He taught me speech and debate, and it was he who suggested that I become a lawyer. He introduced me to many of my life-long friends. His influence on my life was huge. How can you measure the kind of impact he had on our community? A life well lived!

Thank you Dr. Barnes. Your passion and love of literature ignited a fire in me for learning that touches me every day. You were a teacher that helped shape my life and mind. Thank you, you will always be in my heart.

To Scott and all the family. in 1980, Dr Barnes was that one teacher who bugged me, irritated me and generally drove teenage me crazy, and I thank God for him. He helped take a kid on the road to trouble and pointed me toward a better way of life. He is one of those important people who I owe a debt to for teaching me about character. All my love, all my best.

I have thought of Dr. Barnes over the years with absolute respect. I will always remember his offering compassion and kindness one very bad day in a not particularly very good senior year at Doherty. God Speed.

It was a honor to be one of your many students. May the Lord welcome you home as a faithful servant.

I am so sorry to hear this. Dr. Barnes was my English and Drama teacher back in the mid 80s and I remember his dry humor and genuine concern for his students and his love of the literature.

My condolences to the Barnes family. Having done the first play at Doherty High School in 1975 was an honor. He was my first period, of the first semester, of the year at Doherty. R.I.P Dr. Barnes.
