James Hidy Obituary

James William Hidy died at home on June 2, 2013 after a brief illness. Jim had been a resident of Black Forest for 54 years. James was born to Harold and Florence Phelps Hidy on April 12, 1932 in Greeley, CO. The family home was in Windsor, until they moved to Steamboat Springs in the early 1940's. In Steamboat, Jim learned the plumbing trade and majored in "Outdoor Education!!" He graduated from Steamboat Springs High School in 1950 and attended Colorado A&M College for two years. He married Lavonne Pooschke on March 6, 1953 in Boulder. Jim served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He began his career as a plumber, first in Steamboat Springs and then in Colorado Springs. He worked for Jolly Plumbing and Heating for 37 years. Jim and Bonnie served as campground hosts for 13 years in northwestern Colorado after Jim retired. His vast plumbing knowledge was put to good use for the Colo. State Parks and the Routt-Medicine Bow National Forest. Jim was a member of the Black Forest Sherriff's Posse for 23 years, a life member of the NRA, a member of the Colo. Springs Muzzle Loaders, an active member of the local Black Forest AARP Chpt. #1100, a life member of the Black Forest Community Club and, with Lavonne, was voted Keeper of the Keys for Black Forest in 2007. He was also a Friend of the Black Forest Log School, where he enjoyed telling stories to visiting children, and he gave many Black Powder - Mountain Man demonstrations to students for a number of years in various schools. He was a teller of Tall Tales. "Keep your powder dry and watch your topknot!" James was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Charles; and sister, Verna Atkinson. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lavonne (Bonnie); daughter, Christine (Roger) Aldridge of Lake George; sons, James R. (Wanda) Hidy of Broomfield and Terry (Penny) of Port Charlotte, FL; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Fulcher of Colorado Springs; brother-in-law, John Atkinson of Broomfield; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and his Black Forest Lutheran Church family. He will be missed by his family, his many friends, and his faithful Cockers, Shaggy and Shadow. A memorial service will be on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 11:00 am at Black Forest Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund at Black Forest Lutheran Church, 12455 Black Forest Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80908.

Our greatest sympathies to Bonnie and the rest of the family. First met you when you moved to the Forest. Dand and Jim were great friends and both served on the Black Forest Sheriff's Posse together to help make the Forest a better place to live.
