Janis Ozolins Obituary

Janis Ozolins, 86, a resident of Colorado Springs since 1975, passed from this life on the evening of Friday, August 23, 2013 at his home in Colorado Springs after a short, severe illness.

Janis was born on January 22, 1927 in Limbaži, Latvia to the late Peteris and Helena. He was the youngest of four children. He attended agricultural school in Latvia, but was then caught up in WWII, eventually joining the American Army.

Janis was a decorated war veteran and a career soldier of 27 years, who worked in Army Air Defense Command, Artillery. He fought in World War II and Vietnam and had multiple tours of duty in Ethiopia and Germany.

Upon retiring from his military career, he went to locksmith school and appliance rebuilding school in Colorado Springs, where he successfully built up his business for the past 30 years, rebuilding washer and dryers.

He was a healthy, active, vibrant and fun-loving individual who loved his family and friends, and everyone he met. He made friends easily and always had a smile, a story from his military days and a firm handshake.

He was a member of the Germania Club for 37 years and loved fishing, rebuilding washers and dryers, swimming every day and loved nothing more than having family and friends around for barbeques by the pool.

Janis had married his 1st wife of 22 years, Sonja Volger, whom he met and married in 1957. He was widowed when she passed away in August 1979.

He then married Rita Assaiante on April 30, 1988, where they enjoyed numerous cruises together for 24 years, until her passing on April 30, 2012.

He is survived by his daughters: Veronika Davidson of Colorado Springs, Anita Rosen of Colorado Springs, Loreen Ozolins (husband, Bruce Turner) of Devonport, New Zealand, and Jennifer Young (husband, Clarence) of Colorado Springs.

He has six grandchildren: Joshua Ozolins, Jacqueline Parry (husband, Daniel), Jessonia Wilson, (husband, Lawrence), Clinton Rosen, Cary Young (wife, Dawn), and Sean Young (wife, Melanie). He has ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by his extended family in Latvia whom he had located after a 50 year separation.

This great man will not only be remembered for the things that he has done or the places he has been but for the seeds that he planted in us all that turned into forests.

We love and miss you!

John will be very much missed, as will the barbeques by the pool and his war-stories. There can be few men who had such a wealth of experiences from the turmoil of the end of the Second World War to the quiet semi-retirement of re-furbishing washers and dryers and DELIVERING them until a few weeks before his death.
