Jerry Donley was born in Denver, Colorado, and lived on the family ranch in Larkspur for seven years. He is predeceased by his parents Richard and Mildred Donley and his brother Richard. He graduated Beloit College and received his J.D. from the University of Michigan.
Jerry moved to Colorado in 1953 and joined the District Attorney's office serving as the first legal services attorney. He was promptly drafted and served 2 years at Seattle's Fort Lawton. Then he worked several years as an El Paso County assistant district attorney before entering private practice with HayDen Kane. Over 61 years, he built a highly respected practice, emphasizing insurance defense, estate planning and arbitration. He fully retired in 2017 as a partner with his son Jack and their firm Donley Law PC.
Jerry was blessed to have two remarkable women in his life. Jerry married his college sweetheart Dorothy "Dot" Mayhew and they raised 3 rambunctious, hockey playing boys. Together, they were leaders in the First Presbyterian Church and Colorado Springs. Through their leadership they left a legacy that will have a lasting positive impact. They had been married for 47 years when Dot passed away in 2001.
In 2002 he married Christel Miller. For the next 21 years they shared their like passion for track and field traveling the world participating in hundreds of meets. They were nicknamed the "First Couple of Masters Track and Field." As leaders in USA Masters Track and Field, both received numerous awards highlighted by the David Paine Distinguished Service Award in 2018. They lived their life extremely grateful for each other, family and friends.
As a gifted pole vaulter at Beloit College, his jump of 13' 9" inches remained the record for over 40 years leading to induction to the Beloit Hall of Honor. In 1971, his boy's interest in pole vaulting reignited his passion for vaulting. He took first place in hundreds of Masters Track and Field meets including 13 World Championships in the Pole Vault. His best Masters result was a vault of 13'5" at 48 years of age. In addition to participating as an athlete, he served as an administrator, meet director, official, coach & volunteer. For example, he chaired the USATF Masters Track & Field from 1982 to 1989. Donley also competed in the long jump, hurdles, shot put, dashes, and decathlon. He was inducted into the USATF Masters Hall of Fame in 1999. Last year, equipped with a pacemaker and fighting Parkinson's disease, he won the men's 90-94 year old shot put at the Masters Outdoor Championships.
Jerry served in virtually every leadership role at First Presbyterian Church except minister. One of his proudest roles was as the 6th grade Sunday school teacher which he and Dot taught for decades. His community volunteer activities included Boys Club, Kiwanis, Mariners Club, JCs, D11 Accountability and Pikes Peak Roadrunners.
He is survived by his children Charles (Valerie), Jack (Doris), David "Chad;" his grandchildren Christopher, Anne, Tiffany, Kline, Melinda and Laura (predeceased); and great grandchildren; Ari and Lincoln. His bonus family with Christel included Nils (Toyan), Sonja (Rainer - predeceased), Gunnar (Lisa), Steven (Lisa), and Douglas (predeceased) and grandchildren Lucas, Devin, Siena, Anika, Maximus, Stephanie and Grant.
Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church on March 3 at 1PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs, Beloit College, Men and Women's Track, or University of Michigan Law School, for exemplary students who need financial assistance.

Uncle Jerry was my dad's younger brother. My earliest memory is of him carrying me in his arms from the car into his house on a dark night. I must have been 4 or 5. He and Aunt Dot were like movie stars to me. I thought they were so glamorous and exciting. I traveled a lot over the years, but often returned for visits to Colorado Springs, where Uncle Jerry and Aunt Dot's house was every bit as glamorous as they were. I don't remember the year, but I had been training for half-marathons and running regularly. I went to visit Uncle Jerry, and he took me out to the Air Force Academy training facility. I watch him pole vault while I ran laps around the track. It was such a gift to spend time with him that way--seeing him do what he loved and talking to him about my own love of running. When Aunt Christel came into his life, I loved following their exploits from one city to another where they would wow us all with their athletic super powers. Uncle Jerry was powerful force in my childhood and will remain an inspiring role model to me as I age.

Jerry was an amazing man by so many measures, from his physical achievements to his bright mind but above all, his deep and enduring faith in Jesus. His quiet and soft spoken manner made him easy to like and admire. He served as an elder and trustee and clerk of session at First Pres for many years and was always quick to listen and thoughtful in response. I know the Lord has welcomed him home with a broad smile as he reunites with family and friends spanning the nine decades of his life on earth!

Jack and Doris and your beautiful kids,
Saddened beyond belief at Jerry´s passing, that picture captures him to a tee. The mischief in those eyes and that ready smile define him, make him so singular. He is justifiably proud of who you are , what you do for others. Your concern and love for others honors his legacy. You are good people, and you are foremost in our family´s thoughts. In the words of John Irving, "Into paradise May the angels lead him."

I knew Jerry through playing hockey with Chuck and Jack, and when I was VP at Beloit College I would visit with him and also advocated for his induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

He was of strong character and modest ego, a refreshing combination that I really enjoyed.

Faithful, smart, thoughtful, humble...always caring for others...Jerry was that gentle soul who made a difference in the lives of others in his walk through life. It was a blessing to know him, to drink in some of his wisdom and benefit from his strong example. He has justly earned the reward of saints. Blessings to the Donley family - may your memories be many and rich, even as you work through the grief of having lost someone so dear.

I will always cherish the many memories I have of Jerry. One that stands out is his pole vaulting. I smile when I think about him pole vaulting in the backyard. He´d start on one side of the yard. Then with a running start he´d stab the pole into the ground, and fly through the air over the bar landing squarely on the mat. He truly was remarkable.
I will always hold onto the wonderful memories I have of both your dad and mom. I was lucky to have known them.
I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers. Sending love
