Jonathan Patten Obituary

February 16, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jonathan T Patten, of Colorado Springs, CO and most recently Louisville, CO. Jon passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025 at the age of 82.
Jon was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was also a highly-regarded teacher and mentor to countless high school students at Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, CO.
Born to Marc and Doris Patten in 1942 in Michigan, Jon was the youngest of four children - Joan Patten Stadler (deceased), Michael Patten (deceased) and Duncan Patten (of Bozeman, MT). As a child, he loved visiting the Sanders Candy factory (then owned by his mother's family). The family headed west to Montana in the late 1950s and Jon spent summers riding his horses through the mountains and meadows of the greater Yellowstone region.
Jon graduated from Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs in 1960. He attended Union College in New York where he met the love of his life Carol Gardner their senior year. He graduated with a B.S in mechanical engineering in 1964, and the couple married that summer.
Jon and Carol moved to Bozeman MT for Jon to attend Montana State University, where he graduated with an M.S. in Mathematics. They moved to Madison WI where Jon would start a PhD, but in 1970 he was called to return to Fountain Valley School as a math teacher.
Jon went on to live, raise a family, and work at Fountain Valley School for over 30 years, holding positions as math teacher, math department chair, Dean of Students, soccer and squash coach, mentor, cooking instructor and friend. He was an early and avid adopter of computers and new technology that would stay with him for the rest of his life. FVS gave Jon such a strong sense of purpose and was infinitely rewarding to him as he worked with students from all over the world. After he retired, he continued to advocate for the school as a member of the Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2015, an active alumni fund raiser, and through numerous volunteer opportunities.
His retirement brought more time for his favorite pastime of golf. He and Carol traveled the world, and the US, exploring new courses and reconnecting with friends. Jon and Carol enjoyed the Broadmoor Golf Club where they had been members since the early 70s. He was an avid science fiction reader (amassing an impressive library), a great chef, a math tutor, and an aspiring author and graphing software expert.
Jon made time to travel to the family ranch in MT as often as possible, where adventures and meals with extended family created cherished memories for us all.
Those who knew him, know that he never met a stranger, he was "always well", he had an amazing zest for life and counted all his friends as family. He is survived by his wife Carol G Patten; his children Joelle Patten (Chris Wood), Dan Patten (Caroline Haines), Jimmy Patten; grandchildren Kaya Patten Fusselman (Nate), Cecilia Patten Musey (Nick), Connor Patten, Topher Patten, Parker Patten, Kyra Wood; great granddaughter Simone Musey; brother Duncan Patten (Eva) and his nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed as he was one of a kind!
Celebration of Life to be scheduled at a future date.

Carol, Joelle, Danny, and Jimmy, please accept my belated condolences. Your husband/father was so important to me while I was at FVS, I cannot tell you. He always made me feel worthwhile, no matter whether I did something well or not so well, which was often. I wanted to be around him and there is nothing more powerful for a teacher. As a middle school American History teacher in a Title I, high immigrant population environment, your dad serves as a model of commitment, passion, and caring for me to this day. I can only hope to ever be as good or as true and he will be a part of who I am always. Thank you for sharing him with me and so many others who he loved and cared for. He was a great man.

I wasn´t at FVS long, but Mr Patten was a great teacher and coach, a mathematician, and, most importantly, together with Carol, an honorable human being and guiding light for many young people. RIP.

Jon and Carol were very generous individuals. I knew them through my son Ben McKinley who taught in the math department when Jon was Chairman of the Department. When I moved to Colorado Springs in 1986 to accept a job as vice president of Development and Community Relations at St. Francis Hospital downtown, Carol Patten sold me my Mountain Shadows home. It was then that I got to know them better. They let my three sons and me stay in their home for a long weekend once to explore Colorado Springs while they were away at the ranch. I have very fond memories of that time. I have stayed in touch with them through the mail until their move to be near Boulder, CO.
Ben and I have great respect for the whole family and send our deepest sympathy to their two sons and their daughter and all of those in their families!
