Joseph Geoghan Obituary

With heavy hearts, the Geoghan family announces the passing of Dr. Joseph Edward Geoghan ("Dr. Joe"). Born in Canton, Ohio in 1924, Joe served our country as a medic while in the Philippines and Japan at the end of WWII. After the war, Joe graduated from Western Reserve School of Dentistry in 1950. Also in 1950, Joe married Mary Frances Lewis on July 5th and after two years stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, Joe and Mary relocated to Norwalk, Ohio where Dr. Geoghan opened the practice that would become Geoghan, Sommers and Loch. While in Norwalk, Joe served as President of the Norwalk Board of Education, Director of National City Bank (formerly Huron County Bank), and a member of the North Central Dental Society. He was also a life-long member of the VFW, Elks and Rotary Clubs. Joe was instrumental in the fluoridation of Norwalk's public water supply. Dr. Geoghan retired from dentistry in 1989 and enjoyed 22 more years filled with woodworking and carving, travel, reading, bird watching and coffee drinking with his pals at Berry's. After 59 wonderful years in Norwalk, Joe and Mary moved to Colorado Springs in 2009 to be closer to their family. They celebrated 61 years of marriage on July 5, 2011. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Joseph E. Geoghan in 1932; his mother, Blanche Miller Geoghan Haas in 1989; sister, Nancy in 1993; and step-father Thomas H. Haas in 1974. Surviving Joe are wife, Mary and children, Dr. Randy (Loretta) and Tina Geoghan (Randy Halfpop) of Colorado Springs; Garth; Maureen Geoghan (Jim Ball) and Julie Byrd (Jeff), all of the Denver area and Teri Jump (John) of Kettering, Ohio. Surviving grandchildren include: Heath Huggins (Laura), Leigha Huggins (Kevin), Cai and Bailey Geoghan, Seth, Meaghan and Kara Jump and great-grandchild Heath Gavin Huggins. Joe's family would like to thank the numerous friends of Joe and Mary's in Norwalk who shared their lives and laughter with this extraordinary man. Thanks also to the Geoghans' newfound friends at MacKenzie Place for their amazing show of love and support during Joe's final days. All who were touched by this man's heart and humor will be forever blessed. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and patients. A gathering to celebrate Joe's long life will be held at MacKenzie Place on the corner of Fillmore and Union in Colorado Springs on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made in Dr. Geoghan's honor to Pikes Peak Hospice (www.pikespeakhospice.org) or Disabled American Veterans (www.dav.org).
