Judith Sargent Obituary

Sargent
Judith Lynne
Sargent
August 6, 1943
January 15, 2023

After a brief stay in hospice, Judith "Judy" Lynne Sargent passed away on January 15, 2023 due to complications from multiple organ decline. Judy is survived by her husband Laurence "Larry" Sargent, daughters Leslie and Susan, and two grandchildren, along with dear nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her three siblings.
Born August 6, 1943 in Stockton, CA to Evan and Virginia (Grover) Totman, Judy grew up in Sacramento, CA. A 1961 graduate of McClatchy High School, she went on to attend Sacramento City College and Sacramento State University, earning a degree in Psychology in 1968. Judy began a career at Cal-West Life Insurance Co. in 1965, first as a secretary and then as a computer programmer.
Judy met her future husband Larry Sargent in 1968, and they married March 15, 1969 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Daughters Leslie and Susan came along and Judy managed several moves of the family between Davis, CA and Greeley, CO. The family settled in Urbandale, IA in 1979. Judy proudly served as PTO President of Rolling Green Elementary while her daughters were young. In 1985, she enrolled at Des Moines Area Community College, finishing a degree in Computer Programming that led to employment with the Principal Financial Group through 1995.
As empty nesters, Judy and Larry moved to Colorado Springs, CO. Judy pursued her certification for Master Gardener while working for a local plant nursery. She later found fulfilling employment with Over the Hill Gang International, which allowed her to ski, travel, and meet active mature adults. Fiercely committed to serving others, she volunteered for Silver Key's Meals on Wheels for 17 years, both delivering to seniors in need and organizing others to do so.
As a dedicated member of the High Plains Unitarian Universalist Church, Judy served on the board and committees and toiled countless hours beautifying the church grounds. At home, she created an elaborate landscape that demonstrated her skill and love of nature. She was an avid environmentalist who lived her values of "reduce, reuse, and recycle." Judy and Larry traveled the far reaches of the globe in retirement. She took particular pleasure in visiting and being visited by family and friends near and far.
A celebration of life service will be February 25, 2023 at 2:00pm at Unity Campus (Unity and High Plains Church UU) located at 1945 Mesa Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80904. Judy was adamant about giving to local charities. If inclined to make a donation in her memory, please give to a local charity of your choice.

Dear Larry and family,
May all our memories of Judy be a blessing. I will always think of going with her all through her garden and listening to her talk about her beauties. Every time the Siberian Iris blooms in my yard I will think of her with great love. I am with you in spirit.
