Lydia South Obituary

One of eight children, Lydia was born on the family homestead in Kendrick, Colorado where she worked in the fields as soon as she was old enough. Her clothes may have been hand-me-downs or mended, and spending money was scarce, but she somehow managed to play basketball and run track at school... despite the fact that her strict parents forbade girls to do such things. Mom was born with a strong spirit and a mind of her own. At the age of 21, she married Kenneth South and together they raised 4 children. Dad's military assignments took the family somewhere new every 2 or 3 years. Some like Landstuhl, Germany or Oahu, Hawaii were great, others like Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri not so much; but no matter what the challenge, Mom worked hard to make a home for us. Mom was also born with a strong sense of duty. Family, friends or neighbors, she cared for those who were sick and did what she could for those in need. Forever making lasagna, pies, brownies and cookies, cleaning, doing laundry or donating countless hours to her church, Mom was always doing something for someone. She complained about it some, but Mom could never say no. A lifetime giver, Mom had a tough time accepting help when she needed it. The last few years were hard for her, but we know she is happy again with a multitude of family and friends she can care for. Please join us to celebrate Mom's life at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 846 East Pikes Peak Avenue on Saturday, December 1 at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, please help someone in need.
