Madonna "Donna" Head

Madonna Head Obituary

Oct 18, 1942 - Dec 3, 2007 Madonna Lorene (Obermueller) Head died at the United States Air Force Academy on December 3, 2007. Donna, as she was known by many, was born in Cody, Wyoming on October 18, 1942, the daughter of Milfred and Bernice (Krieg) Obermueller. She was married to James H. Head on August 16, 1964 in Lincoln County, Kansas. Donna is survived by her mother of Westfall, Kansas; brother, Gary Obermueller of Helena, Montana; husband, Jim, of Monument; daughter Andrea Keilen, of Austin, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Margot and John Saltonstall, of Flagstaff, Arizona; and five grandchildren: Emily, Abby, and Sarah Keilen, and Hayden and Samuel Saltonstall. Donna graduated from the University of Kansas in 1964 with a degree in Home Economics Education. She was a lifelong basketball fan and brought her support from KU to her adopted Falcon team. She taught school in Kansas and Ohio while following her husband on Air Force assignments. In 1984, Donna joined the Federal civil service and worked in child development at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, Fort Carson, and the Air Force Academy, where she served the Academy as Chief of Family Member Programs, including oversight of the Child Development Center, the Youth Center, Youth Sports, Family Child Care, and Part Day Enrichment programs. During her professional career, Donna earned an outstanding reputation for her support of military families and was known throughout the Air Force as an expert in her field. In addition to her own family, Donna was a sponsor "Mom" to dozens of Air Force Academy cadets, for whom she provided a home away from home, complete with loving motherly advice and wisdom. She always saw her investment in cadets as a simple expression of her service to mankind and an investment in the future. As she was of her own children, she was so proud to see them graduate, advance in their careers, and raise families of their own. She will be deeply missed by her family, by her extended Academy family, and by the thousands of Air Force Services professionals who knew and loved her. Donna was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church and since returning to Colorado in 1987, a member of First Lutheran Church, where she served on the Board and shared her faith in Jesus through many volunteer activities. She devoted her life to children. Fromraising her own two daughters and adoring her grandchildren, to sponsoring cadets and nurturing thousands of children in her professional walk, she set the standard of care and compassion. We know she lives on in heaven and in the lives of all who knew her. Interment will be at the United States Air Force Academy Cemetery at 1:00 pm, Friday, December 7, 2007, followed by a Memorial Service and Reception at the First Lutheran Church at 2:15 pm. Memorial contributions may be sent to the First Lutheran Church, 1515 N. Cascade, Colorado Springs 80907.

Not only was Donna a friend and a long-time collegue, she was an inspiration, and my heart goes out to her family and friends. She was a special person that left a special mark on our hearts.

No words can truly express the heartache I feel for Donna's entire family. Everyone who knew her loved her. I turned to Donna on many occasions for wisdom while I worked in DC.. and she was always there for me, as she was for so many others. Donna always signed off her e-mails to me with "Have a Yippey, Skippy Day". No doubt that she is sharing that same positive presence and outlook with those that surround her now - and I know that she is looking down on us and taking care of us still. You are missed, Donna, and you will never be forgotten.

Very Respectfully,

Candace M.E. Bird

My prayers go out to the Head and Obermueller families. Donna's impact on Air Force families will be missed. May her good will carry on in the countless lives she touched and may the Lord continue to bless all who had the opportunity to know her.

From across the Country, Donna and her family are both in my heart and prayers. Knowing Donna professionally I was honored with her company at least once a year during an AF training conference. She was an inspirtion and lives on in the memory of so many of her counter flight chiefs throughout the world. She is remembered for her many contributions and I for one am very grateful I knew her.
God's Blessings and my prayers to all who are experiencing her loss.

Sir, I don't think I met Donna but I probably did and don't remember it--Gen Wakin's retirement, Gen Cubero's retirement, etc.

My sincerely condolences to you and your daughters. I know exactly how your daughters feel as I lost my mother earlier this year.

May your memories help you all through this time.

Sincerely,

Donna and Jim have touched hundreds, likely thousands, of lives and hearts. I grieve for Donna, Jim, their families and friends. My first thought was "Why Donna, God? I'd take her place if you asked me." She truly WAS a "Madonna", Blessed Mother to so many. My heart aches for Jim and family. Prayers and enduring love to all.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Donna was such a kind and generous woman. If we have learned anything from this senseless tragedy is that you can not take any moments in life for granted. Cherish all your loved ones every minute of every day. I will ask God to draw you close to Him at this time.

My prayers and thoughts are with you BG Head and family. I worked with Donna out at Fort Carson from 1990-91 in the CDS system. She was a wonderful mentor, and co-worker. Her positive and generous attitude always shined through everyday I worked with her. Children were her life and she did a great job with all the children and young adults she came into contact with. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with Donna's family and extended family. Cynthia C. C/S CO

My mother and I are so deeply sorry for your loss and for this tragedy. Mrs. Head was one of the most kind, outgoing, generous and fun people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. I am sure she already is regaling her neighbors in Heaven with plenty of stories from Earth, reuniting with old friends and making many new ones.

As a former employee of Donna's and having a special relationship with her, it is in my sincere and deepest regret that this has happened. She will never be forgotten and her work will go on through all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I know there are never the right words at a time such as this but she is one of a kind. She was like a mom to me and a mentor. She believed in people and pushed them to do their best, just as she did. She will be missed greatly.
