Mamie D. Hunter Obituary

Mamie D. Hunter walked on July 26, 2016 with her husband of 60 years by her side.

Born in Sicily Island, LA on December 24, 1934 to Horace and Rowena Williams, she was the 2nd eldest of 13 siblings. At a young age the family relocated with 8 siblings to Little Rock, AR. Mamie attended all her formative years of education in Little Rock, graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar HS in 1953. She attended the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff earning a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and went on to Chapman College earning a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice in 1992.

Mamie and Alfred Hunter wed on July 15, 1956 in Little Rock, AR. Alfred was an enlisted serviceman in the United States Air Force. Two sons were born, Alfred Jr. in 1957 and Frederick in 1959. Mamie loved her boys, instilling the value of an education and providing them with life's tools to succeed. She loved God, baptized at the age of 9, family and friends were important; no one was ever a stranger in her presence. As a military wife she maintained the home, raised her young men and supported her husband during 29 years of military service. This included moves to Texas, Denver, CO, North Dakota, Arkansas, Nevada and finally settling in Colorado Springs, in August of 1971.

Mamie enjoyed being a valued servant at St. Johns Baptist Church for 35 years. Her other activities included being a member of the Ski Ambassador Club. She belonged to the Friendship Force International group; this was close and dear to her personal mission of unconditional peace through friendship around the world. Mamie travels to 14 countries including New Zealand, St. Petersburg, Russia, France, Japan and Africa.

She worked for Current Stationary of Colorado Springs for 16 years, Silver Key Organization for Senior citizens and worked for Widefield School District 3 for 21 years as a substitute teacher and assistance in the attendance office. Mamie retired from Mesa Ridge High School at the end of the 2010-2011 school year to join her CMSGT (ret. USAF) husband. This past July 15, 2016 Mamie and Alfred celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Her dear friend Kathy Nickell shared something we all knew "Mamie always had advice whether you wanted it or not. One thing for sure is she was usually right." Mamie was seen as the matriarch of her large extended family keeping others connected and keeping the history of the Williams origin present to this day.

Mamie is preceded in death by her son Frederick, parents Horace and Rowena Williams, sisters Curtistine, Betty, Clara and brothers Horace Jr., James and Robert. Mamie was a devout Baptist, many will miss her, among those the most will miss Mamie are her husband of 60 years, Alfred Sr., son Alfred Jr. (Ann), grandsons Geoff, Mikal and Blake. Sisters Bonnie (Bob) Kunde, Patsy Ebah, Janice Bailey, brothers Charles Williams and Kenneth (Brenda) Williams.

Visitation was held Monday August 1st at Angelus Chapel from 4-7 pm and a graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs on Tuesday August 2, at 11:00 am
