Marjorie Strait Obituary

Marjorie L. Strait, 94, of Colorado Springs died June 9, 2006 at the Village at Skyline. She was married to Warren B. Strait, her husband for 66 years. Warren preceded her in death in 2000. A graduate of Albion (MI) College in 1934, she taught for seven years in Michigan before becoming a homemaker while her children were growing. She then taught for 19 years at Skyway Elementary School in School District 12. She was active in the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society and received the Community Service Award for presenting rock and mineral programs to fourth, fifth and sixth graders in El Paso County. Marjorie was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary women's educational society, serving both local and statewide organizations leadership positions. Other interests included scout leadership for her children and did tutoring for competitive skaters at the Broadmoor Skating Club. She enjoyed antiques, being a member of Treasure Trails antique study group, and travel after retirement that led to extensive rock, mineral and shell collections. Her shell collection is on display at the Village at Skyline. Volunteering and working for First United Methodist Church was her great joy. Having joined the church in 1945, she was a tireless worker for over 60 years. She did many things such as making dinners for the youth group meetings, stuffing envelopes for the variety of mailings and leading Sunday school. She will be inurned in the Columbarium at First United Methodist Church. Her children: Donald Strait of Aurora and Judith Carlson of Iowa City (IA); grandchildren: Jennifer Corning of Northglenn and Kenneth Strait of Portland (OR); and three great-grandchildren: Alexis Corning, Shannan Corning and Samantha Corning, survive her. The Memorial Service will be Tuesday, June 27 at 1:00 p. m. in the Lehmburg Chapel of First United Methodist church. The family requests that memorial donations be made to: Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, 825 E. Pikes Peak Ave, Suite 600, Colorado Springs, CO., 80903-3624.

Although I never had Mrs. Strait as a teacher, I did have her son Don as a teacher, a coach and a friend. My last encounter with Mrs. Strait, was in the parking lot of Giuseppi's depot restaurant. She commented on hoe "big" I had become and that I needed to shed my excess puonds. Well I have. Sad Mrs. Strait is gone now.
