Minerva Turner Obituary

Mrs. Minerva Lee Murdock Turner was born June 3, 1917 and was the daughter of Daniel and Estella (Hostler) Murdock, and the stepdaughter of Maggie (Pettiford) Murdock, the oldest American at the age of 112 when she passed on July 22, 2000. Minerva grew up in Fayetteville, NC, but traveled extensively in Europe and the United States on tour with the USO as well as her devoted husband of 50 years, the former 1SG (Retired) Willie H. Turner. The Turners made their life long home in Stratmoor Hills and resided in the Ft Carson/Colorado Springs area for over 36 years. Minerva's mother, Estella, passed when Minerva was a young teen and her mother's sister, Rachel (Hostler) Hollingsworth, along with her husband Nathaniel, raised Minerva with their two sons the former Marshall Hostler of Washington, DC and Archie Hollingsworth of Fayetteville, NC. Minerva was involved in volunteerism and participated in numerous clubs and organizations as a military wife such as: The USO, the Fort Carson NCO Wives Club, and the DAV Women's Auxiliary as well as many others. Mrs. Turner leaves one daughter, Patricia Turner Thompson of Columbia, SC; four grandsons; Jerome (Shayla) of North Charleston, SC; KJ (LaTonia) of Columbia, SC; and Turner and Moe of Columbia, SC; three great-grandsons: Khalil and Ty'Reik (Jerome) of North Charleston, SC; and, Ja'Kori(KJ) of Columbia, SC; four loving first cousins: Mary (Hostler) Hendon of Spring Lake, NC; Essie (Hostler) Gerald, Jennie Bell (Hostler) McDonald of Fayetteville, NC, and, Annie Mary (Turner) Owens of Atlanta, GA; one niece: Jacqueline (Hollingsworth) Davis of Chicago, IL, and, two nephews: Glenn Hollingsworth of Greensboro, NC and Neil Hollingsworth of Fayetteville, NC; close family friends: Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham and family; Mr. and Mrs. Green and family; Mr. and Mrs. Logan and family; Mr. and Mrs. Reed and family, Mrs. Flossie Kemp and family and Mrs. Janet Tatnall and family, as well as numerous life long friends in the Colorado Springs and Fort Carson community. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 PM Tuesday, April 25, 2006 at Angelus Funeral Directors located at 2535 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM at Soldier's Memorial Chapel Bldg. #1500 on Fort Carson Base in Colorado Springs, CO on Wednesday April 26, 2006. Interment at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
