Dan Hawk
January 16, 2017
Richard represents a time in history that his children and grandchildren may not know. My name is Dan Hawk and I attended Sidney Lanier High School at the same time as Richard. I didn't know him, but he was among just a handful (maybe 12) of African Americans who attended a white high school for the very first time. 1969 was the very first year of integration and he was among those who braved the change. Unlike today, that was a much tougher time, especially in the south, and many of the students didn't like the change and weren't very friendly or accepting of the black people coming into our schools. Ironically, Sidney Lanier is an almost all black school now. I can't imagine how it must have been for Richard, but I'm confident he should be labeled as one of the civil rights people leading the way for attending as one of twelve or so blacks in a graduating class of over 800 seniors. I'm sorry for your loss.
