Rufus Watson Obituary

Rufus Watson, known to his friends and family as "Rudy" was born March 20, 1924, in Louisiana to Dinah Lofton and Lee Andy Pennywell. He married and spent "72" love filled

years with Lillian Watson. He proudly served 22 years in the United States Army and was a decorated soldier, earning a Purple Heart while in combat in the Korean War. During the war Rudy served with the 758th which was redesigned to the 64th Heavy Tank Battalion. The 64th was an all-black armored unit that met annually after the war, for more than 25 years. They also awarded scholarships to high school graduates.

Upon retiring from the military, he lived a wonderful life in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he earned an associate degree in business at Blaire College; and had a 2nd career as a car salesman for 18 years, at the Bob Foss Motors Company. Salesman of the month was a common recognition for Rudy.

Filled with wit, banter and encouragement, he enjoyed every moment of his life. He cherished his service to the Purple Heart Association. Meeting his comrades and working Fridays

for the organization.

He believed education was the key to a good life. If his grandchildren called to borrow money for tuition or books, they got it! He was ahead of his time with the latest technology and known around town by the local electronic stores; they all had his office number on speed dial to let him know when the latest computer gadgets arrived.

His proud moments were watching his children's achievements. He was his family's inspiration to go out in the world and do good things. This man and his values will forever be central to his family's lives.

He is survived by his beautiful wife Lillian, devoted daughter Irma and son-in-law Bin, grandchildren, Tori and husband Jory, Leslie, Erika, and husband Marrio and great-grandchildren Stanley and wife Marissa, Joshua, Justin Rufus and Elizabeth, Kimora, Khalil, Elishah, Jocqobi, Yaminah, Jalyiah, Trinity, Javon Joseph Rufus, Katalina, Z'yanne, Solielh, and Jaide Isabella. Also four brothers, Colonel Johnson Pennywell, US Army, Ret. and wife Juanita, Elvin and wife Betty, Lee and wife Linda, and Nathanial Pennywell and three sisters, Ira Ollie and husband Lewis, Blanche Peacock, Dorothy Wilkerson, nephews and nieces, sister-in-laws and numerous cousins and friends upon friends.

Rufus Watson was buried on Friday, February 20, 2015, in the Houston National (Veteran) Cemetery, Houston, Texas, with military honors. Memorial services in Colorado Springs will be held at a later date. Donations in his honor can be made to the Purple Heart Scholarship Fund. 2 Carson Circle, Fountain, CO 80817
