Sylvia Cornell - mother, grandma, great-grandma, and friend to many - passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 20, 2022, at the age of 87 in Monument, Colorado.
Sylvia was born on August 14, 1935 to George and Gladys (Anderson-Berg) Greaves in Oakland, California. She graduated from Sequoia high school in Redwood City, California before attending Stanford University. She married Kent Cornell in 1957 and welcomed four daughters, but later divorced.
Through the years in Fremont, California, Sylvia stayed busy as a homemaker raising four girls. She was their scout leader, room mother, and was involved with the PTA and the neighborhood ladies' group. With her involvement in the PTA, she was approached and encouraged to run for School Board. She ran for office and was elected to the Fremont Unified School District and served for several terms. During her tenure, she attained the position of President of the Board. She received great satisfaction from serving others and was proud of all she accomplished while in office.
When her daughters got older, Sylvia took some night classes to refresh her skills and became employed as an administrative assistant for various companies for many years.
After Sylvia retired, she became involved with the Tri-City women's group and enjoyed playing bridge and volunteering at their many fundraising functions. At this point in her life Sylvia was thrilled to be able to take many trips with her two best friends and travel the World. Europe and Russia were the highlights for her. At seventy years old, Sylvia moved to Monument, Colorado, to be closer to three of her four daughters. In Monument, she enjoyed family gatherings, playing bridge, outings with the ladies' group, and the friendliness of her new community.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys Greaves.
Sylvia is survived by her daughters, Karen (Sam) Wimmer, Shelly (Art) Fuellenbach, Kristen DeHerrera, and Shannon (Paul) Keswick; her grandchildren, Natalie (Alex) Smith, Elise (Cody) Ayers, Grant Fuellenbach, Evan (Jacky) Fuellenbach, Jillian DeHerrera, Kiley Keswick, and Maddie Keswick; her great-granddaughters, Camryn, and Sloan Ayers; her great-grandson, John Fuellenbach; her sister, Glenda (Doug) Wright; and her nieces and nephew.
Her generous spirit will be greatly missed.
The family would like to thank Bethesda Gardens and Abode hospice for their compassionate care during Sylvia's short stay.
