It was a pleasure to serve with Van as a Victim Advocate. He was a true professional - always sensitive and empathetic, but with a ready smile and a warm hug. Joan and family, I pray that you have the strength and courage to carry on without Van at your side.

I will miss my long time friend and co-worked from the old days of Joy Manufacturing. Van was like a Dad to me and he and Joan came to my wedding in Estes Park. A very gentle spirit and kind man. I know he has gone to be with our Heavenly Father, but his spirit will always be with me and all the wonderful memories. God Bless

Van was the first person I met when I joined the advocate group. He made me feel at ease.
I never got to go on call with him. But I did go to Cova with him and he was fun to be with.
I will miss him and I am so glad I got to meet him. He was a special person.

Van was so special to me, we always enjoyed going on call together, usually out in a snow storm, out in Black Forest, both of us blind trying to figure out what the name of that street sign was that we just passed, laughing all the way. Van had such a gentle way that pulled at your heart strings, even now makes me tear up. I loved that he and Joan would come to see all my babies, bring great gifts, and love on them. I even remember one call down the road and we had to go to see some one else for the call but had to wait for them to wake up. So Van and I stopped by my house so a could nurse a baby real fast. He sat and visited with me at ease and of course I always enjoyed talking to him. Van was pure heart with a great sense of humor and I can still her his great laugh and see how his eyes would tear up when he laughed so hard that everyone in the room couldn't help but laughing, and that's how I will choose to remember him. A smiling light who loved his wife with all his heart and always worried about her, who gave of himself as long as he could, to be there for people going through a sad crisis, and his spirit made a great difference in this world. I loved him and I will miss him greatly. Love and God Bless, Nichole

My dad was a loving, compassionate, devoted father and husband. He was an incredible role model for John and myself. Growing up, my mom would tell me, "you're just like your father" - well being a little girl I didn't like hearing that. Now, I am flattered and can't think of a more gracious compliment. Daddy cherished those who were in his life and there were no limits to his love and support. I will miss his comforting hugs, him holding up my chin telling me to smile and think positive. Dad became a victims advocate at the El Paso Sheriffs Dept with some encouragement from me - I had gained so much comfort from him, I knew he would be great at helping others, and of course he was. I love you daddy, for always and I know you are my gaurdian angel
