William Herholtz Obituary

William 'Bill' Franklin Herholtz of Highlands Ranch, died Thursday October 13, 2011 at home, after a long, courageous fight with cancer. Bill was born May 13, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan to Louise Josephine (Peters) and George Edward Herholtz. He graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1960. Bill was drafted and joined the Navy in 1966. After completing basic training and a six month hospital corpsman school, Bill was assigned to Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. Bill served with the third Marines in Viet Nam in 1968 and 1969. After he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Bill began working with his father in their Grand Rapids Beltone office. Later, he assumed the full responsibility of the business when his father passed in 1973. Bill, his wife, Alice, and their four children moved to Colorado Springs in July 1984 from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bill and Alice accepted a Beltone Hearing Aid office that was not functioning. Within six months, the operation was productive, and eventually it grew to three offices in Colorado Springs, one in Pueblo, one in Canon City and one in Salida employing 12 people. Bill and Alice won the prestigious President's Cup for 1990, which was Beltone's 50th anniversary. The Presidents Cup is the highest award given by Beltone to its dispensers in the U.S. and Canada. The designation is based on specific criteria including customer service, overall satisfaction, professionalism, tenure, involvement in company activities, and community service. Achieving this award was the completion of a 10 year goal and lifelong ambition. A formal celebration of this major accomplishment was held at the Broadmoor Hotel with over 150 guests in attendance on February 2, 1991. Bill and Alice were the 33rd recipients of this prestigious award. Bill was vice president of the Colorado Hearing Aid Society (CHAS) in 1986-87 and served as president in 1988-89. He served as a member of the CHAS' board of trustees for the remainder of his career. Bill was also elected governor of the International Hearing Society from 1992 to 1994. Bill passed the baton for the family business to his son Dr. William Herholtz III in 2002. Then Bill and Alice returned to Beltone in Denver, opening four offices. Bill retired from Beltone on January 1, 2009. Between Bill and Alice, they have a combined 70 years of service in the hearing industry. Bill is a 32nd degree Mason, and he has been a Shriner for more than 40 years. He is also a member of the El Jebel Duffers and the El Jebel Temple Guard. He is a Life Time Member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan, where he is affiliated with Doric Lodge 342. Bill is a proud member of the American Legion Post 103 (Littleton, Colorado). He is also a member of the Good-Guys Rod and Custom Association. In Bill and Alices' free time, they both enjoyed playing golf as often as they could. Bill was also an avid fisherman, especially enjoying trips to Minnesota and Michigan in search of the "big one." Bill and Alice were active members of the First Evangelical Free Church in Colorado Springs. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved cousin, Margaret "Peggy" Murphy of Seattle, Washington. Survived by his wife, Alice, his son Bill (Lara) Herholtz, Colorado Springs; son Eric Herholtz, Detroit, Michigan; daughter Lisa Bath (Colorado Springs), son Bill (Tricia) DeHaan, Colorado Springs; sister Karen (Ron) Swensson, Parker, Colorado; and sister Jeannie (Randy) Birndorf, Longmont, Colorado. Also survived by grandchildren Kymberly, Josef, Thomas, Samuel, Rhett, Kendall, and Madison, and several nieces and nephews and their children. A visitation is scheduled from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011, Swan-Law Funeral Director's. The funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday October 18, 2011, at 11:00 a.m., First Evangelical Free Church, 820 N. 30th Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Shriner's Hospital for Children, Shrine Office, 4525 W. 50th Avenue, Denver, CO, 80212.

I hear they are closing your Guest Book this year. I wanted to write in it one last time how special you were to me! I'm so thankful for the years we had together, but I wish there could've been more. Our whole family will still visit your final resting place and leave "Denver Bronco" decor because it was one of many things you loved. We love and miss you so much!

Sure, it's been a year, but I still think of my old buddy often! I'm glad that Bill ran out and flagged me down as I was riding by his house near Pontiac, Michigan. You see, he had the same motor scooter as me: they were Vespas, and we loved riding together. One brief story: I was riding backwards behind him on Bill's scooter one day. As he braked for a sharp turn, his brake cable snapped. We bounced into the ditch, and were both thrown akimbo, but neither was hurt. Pretty scary, doing it backwards!
Thanks for being a super friend, Bill. I look forward to seeing you in heaven! Till then...Yer bud, Marty

Bill, There are really no adequate words to desribe how special you and Alice are to us! You were such an inspiration in our lives and were our family when ours was so far away. You are the reason why Rob and I chose a personal relationship with Christ. We have nothing but wonderful memories of you; Rob will always cherish your golf outings and I will never forget all of my nicknames you came up with! I think your favorite was Cam-o-flauge. You taught us both so much about life and family! We are truly blessed to have known and loved you Bill! I know you are at peace now with Jesus and I will see you again one glorious day! We love you all!

Who was Bill Herholtz to me? Technically, he was my step-father; but he was as much a father to me as any man could be.

Bill was my mentor and friend who taught me to believe in God.

He got me started in my career and I am so thankful for that. Bill taught me how to tie a tie and spit-shine my shoes. He showed me how to dress for success and offer a firm hand shake. He trained me to look a person in the eye and always be positive! His advice was to never be late for work, give more than you receive, and remember that the patient is always right; even when they are wrong.

Bill taught me that hard work pays off, that charcoal is always better than gas and a window can never be too clean.

As a father, he supported me unconditionally. He was always proud of my accomplishments and praised me whether I deserved it or not. My father was an extremely generous person who even parked his car outside on cold nights so I could park mine in the garage.

So much of who I am today comes from Bill Herholtz. I will never forget him. I will always love him and miss him! Thank you dad for all that you have done for me!

Your loving son,

Kendall and Papa "2006"

Papa and I loved each other very much and had a strong relationship. We would call each other on the phone and talk about our feelings, school and each other. The most important thing to me was making sure he was feeling okay! Papa taught me to do a lot of things, but by far the best thing was feeding carrots to the rabbits and sitting together watching them eat through the window. I loved spending every moment I could with him and now all of these things will be missed. But at least I have a memory full of things that we did and I know who he was. He put a smile on my face, made me happy and laughed every time I saw him. Papa meant the world to me and he will be missed dearly. He was amazing and there isn’t a big enough word in this entire world to describe him! I am so blessed that he was a part of my life but there will always be a part of my heart missing. I know that he isn’t in pain anymore and is happy. I love you papa so much and God bless you.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” Ecc. 3:1-4

Because you fought so long and hard, it is hard to believe that the day of your passing has come. Your strength and courage through this ordeal have been an inspiration to all who know and love you.

You have been the best big brother in the entire universe, and I shudder when I think I can no longer talk to you...I miss you so already, but I know the loving memories that those of us in your family and circle of friends share will give me strength as time passes.

Your laughter and love will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of being a part of your life.

Brother Bill, please know that you will be loved forever by the lucky people in your life.

Thank you for leading our family so well since 1973. I am so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. Thank you for loving my children and being the best Uncle in the world to them. Most of all, thank you for being you. I don't want to end this, but I know that I must.

I believe that God sends the right people into our lives at just the right time. I am so grateful for the time I had with you; you were a wonderful father-in-law! I will miss our warm cheek-to-cheek hugs and kisses, your words of encouragement, and inspirational notes sent in BIG manila envelopes via "snail mail" (we were alike in many ways). In the end, your reputation as a generous, strong, and faithful man was victorious over the battle you fought. YOU will live on in so many touched hearts and changed lives! I am thankful Heaven secured a beautiful place for you to rest in quietness and peace. I already miss you. . . I am NEVER going to forget you. . . I will always love you!

Brother Bill,
In the nearly 45 years that we've known each other, you always have shown a wonderful big heartedness and generosity toward a great many people. I've admired how you could engage even a stranger with interesting conversation. And that laugh--what a great laugh! Congratulations on being a phenomenal friend, dad, grandfather, uncle, etc. Congrats, too, on your many achievements. You are loved.
How euphoric you must be now... in the afterlife after believing in the Word of the authoritative Scriptures.

We will miss you dearly Boss, Friend and Mentor. Mike and I owe a great deal of gratitude to Bill and Alice for for employing us both at a time when we were down and out! They took us under their wings and taught us the ins and outs of the Hearing Aid Business and thanks to them we have our own Hearing Aid Business. Bill was always so warm and generous to everyone he came in contact with and I will never forget the little chuckle he always gave me when I answered the phone. He said he loved the way I answered it! I loved his Smile! He and Alice made me feel as a very important part of their family! In 2008 Bill and Alice helped us celebrate our daughter's high school graduation! Thank you Bill and Alice for always making us feel so special in your lives.
