WILLIAM E LLOYD MD

April 14, 2021
William (Bill) Lloyd was born in Adrian, MI to Merle and Helen (Darling) Lloyd. Soon after he was born, they moved to Lansing, MI where Bill lived until his graduation from Lansing Eastern High School in 1944. Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the navy and became an Aviation Radioman 2nd class. After his discharge at the end of WWII, 1946, he returned to Lansing and began his college education at Michigan State University. He graduated with a BS degree in 1950 and then started medical school at
Northwestern University. He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1953. He met his future wife, Gretchen Wright, at Michigan State. They married in Clyde, OH August 4, 1951.
Following his graduation from medical school, they moved to Seattle, WA for a 1 year internship at Swedish Hospital. They then moved to Salt Lake City, UT for a 4 year surgical residency at the VA hospital starting in 1954. Sons Steven and Scott were born during this time. The family left Salt Lake City in 1958 and moved to Loveland, CO where Bill opened a general surgery private practice. Daughter Debra was born while they lived in Loveland. In 1961, Bill was certified by the American Board of Surgery. In 1962 he was admitted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. In 1962, the family moved to Colorado Springs where he practiced general surgery until his retirement in 1987. During his career he was active in the Colorado Medical Society, including becoming president.
Bill started being active in his community as a Boy Scout, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout. He was very active at First United Methodist Church Colorado Springs and the Rotary Club of North Colorado Springs. He was chosen as a member of the Pikes Peak AdAmAn Club in 1976. He made the trip up Pikes Peak 21 times with the club for the annual New Year's Eve fireworks.
Bill was an avid outdoors man, enjoying mountain climbing, hiking, skiing, camping, fly fishing, and bicycling. He was an avid photographer (including doing his own developing and printing) and ham radio operator. He loved traveling to all 50 states and many countries, all kinds of do-it-yourself projects, and was an early adapter of the home computer, enjoying writing his own programs.
Bill is survived by his wife Gretchen; Children: Steven (Julie), Scott (Linda), and Debra; Grandchildren: Aaron, Chris, Jay, and Sarah; Sister Marilyn, and several nephews and 1 niece. A service will be held at 2:00 pm on April 29, 2021 at First United Methodist Church, 420 N. Nevada Ave CSC, 80903. Livestream of the service will be available at fumc-cs.org and on Facebook.
