Audrey Daigle Obituary

Audrey Jean Daigle passed away on July 20, 2011 in Colorado Springs after a long, hard fought battle with a cruel foe that could not be beaten - Alzheimer's disease. She was born December 20, 1925 in Stewart, North Dakota to Roy and Hanna (Scheiber) Stearns. Survived by her two sons, Jim (Nancy) of Colorado Springs and Steve (Stephanie) of Security, six grandchildren, Michele (Mike) Houdek, Jennifer (Brandon) Smith-Daigle, Danielle Daigle, Jonathan (Kim) Daigle, Stephanie Jo Daigle and Evann Daigle, nine great-grandchildren Audrey-Hannah, Annabelle, Lennon, William, Henry, Elyse, Mandalyn, Alistair and Bastain, and many, many friends, especially her dear, best friend at Woodburn House, Maple. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Allen and granddaughter Drew Jamison Daigle. Audrey grew up on the family farm in North Dakota, the second oldest of nine children. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse for two years after she married the love of her life, Allen Daigle on August 4, 1945. They moved to Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin in 1951 and then to Security, Colorado in 1971. Audrey worked as the bookkeeper for Allen's construction business until he retired in the 1990s. Audrey was also the very popular cashier in the cafeteria at Sproul Jr. High until 1978 when she quit that job to be daycare grandma for her grandkids and later great-grandkids. She provided so many days of joy and laughter for them over the years. Audrey enjoyed working in her yard and garden, canning, washing dishes, hanging laundry out on the line to dry, hiking, square dancing, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, knitting and most of all spending time with family and friends. She was famous for her delicious Quick Buns, canned beans and pickles. Her grandkids and great-grandkids were the joys of her life. Audrey's family would like to thank her wonderful care giving family at Life Quality Homes Woodburn House: Abby, Dorcus, Suzie, Nanci, Markaya and Rayme as well as Evercare Hospice, especially Glenda and Jessica. Also John and Lisa Schonewill of Life Quality Homes for their unfailing support during this difficult time. On the day Mom passed, just as we finished packing up her things at Woodburn House a brilliant double rainbow appeared in the sky. Was it a sign from Mom that she and Dad are back together and dancing in heaven? Perhaps... and we'd like to think so. Also the end of the rainbow seemed to be just at Dad and Mom's house in Security. Was the treasure at the end of the rainbow at their house on Cunningham Drive? To all of us who knew and loved them it truly was. Thanks for everything you did for all of us, Mom and Dad! We love and miss you both so much! Keep on dancing!! A visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 25 at the Shrine of Remembrance "America the Beautiful" Chapel. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. at the chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26 at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 5354 S. Hwy 85/87, Security, Colorado 80911. Interment will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery and then family and friends are invited to return to St. Dominic's for a time of food and fellowship. Memorials in Audrey's name may be made to the Polycystic Kidney Foundation, 8330 Ward Parkway, Suite 510, Kansas City, Missouri 64114-2000, or the Alzheimer's Association, 2315 Bott Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80904.

It is sad to hear of aunt Audrey's passing. She was the last sibling left on the Stearns side. I remember what a giving and caring person she was. Audrey will definitely be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I am so sad to hear of aunt Audrey's passing. I am her brother Tom's youngest daughter and had the opportunity to get to know Audrey and Allen better over the last decade or so. Audrey will always be remembered for her smile, laugh and conversation. I looked forward to her North Dakota visits and our correspondence via letters. I considered her a blessing and she will truly be missed. Love and peace to her family.

Mrs. Daigle was so fortunate to have had the most wonderful son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Nancy Daigle, in the world to care for her in her final years. Nancy has been my dear "bestest" friend for more than 50 years and so I know how much Audrey was loved and cherished. Audrey even cared for my daughter when we visited from California when my daughter was a little girl. What a special grandma! I know how much Audrey will be missed but I know that she will be dancing in a very joyous place and was most overjoyed to have been reunited with the love of her life. My love and hugs to everyone!

Mrs. Daigle has always been like a second grandma to me ever since I was little, and she and my own grandma have been friends for years. She's always been a part of my life and I will miss her so much. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time, and I wish them all the best.
