Dennis was one of the brightest souls ive ever seen. Always so uplifting even in the worst conditions. I had the pleasure of training with him at Hurby in FL for about 3 months the going to SERE school with him. He was in charge of getting me in running shape before team kicked off. He ran with me every night and i helped him with his push ups and sit ups. He never let me quit. Man was he fast. I still have some photos of him from 93, if the family wants them just let me know how to get them to you. I tried to find an address but no luck. So sorry for your loss, Blessings.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Dennis Patrick Hay US Army Chief Warrant Officer 2.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,

I recently travelled to Arlington to visit a friend of mine, CPT J.R. Teal who was KIA in OCT 2003. On the very same row, not far at all, I stumbled upon CW2 Hay's marker. Although I didn't know CW2 Hay personally, I remember his death and memorial service vividly. I will always take the time to pay my respects when I visit Arlington. God bless the Hay family.

Ten years have passed since I lost my friend. I'm sorry it took so long to write this message. Dennis and I met in Warrant Officer Candidate School. He was the charismatic one with more badges than the cadre. He had already done more in the military than most would do in an entire career; he was confident yet humble. I was the guy with no badges wondering what he got himself into. We ran into each other in the Commissary one day after graduation and Dennis invited me to his house to share a meal with his family. Rebecca was sweet, kind, and was without a doubt, Dennis' soul mate. Jacob was around three and already smashing the ball. I told Dennis he'd play first base for the Red Sox one day but Dennis said it would have to be the Braves. I met the family dog, Deogy and when I asked how they came up with Deogy, Dennis said, Spell dog. We ended up as stick buddies during the instrument phase of flight school and as we went along, Dennis became like a big brother, someone I looked up to. As Thanksgiving approached, Dennis inquired about my plans. When I told him I was staying at Ft. Rucker, he insisted I join him, Rebecca, and Jacob in Georgia to have dinner with his parents and siblings. That was Dennis; always thinking of others. When it came time for graduation, it was obvious who would receive the Leadership Award - Dennis. Our paths crossed again on deployment and back at Ft. Rucker. Dennis talked of his new baby girl Abigail. The saddest news came one summer day when Rebecca called me to tell me of Dennis' passing. I flew to Colorado to say goodbye and reunited with the strongest people I know. Ten years have now passed and Saturday morning my wife and I visited Arlington where we saw his name on a stone in a field with others who selflessly gave their lives. Thank you to whoever got there before us and put flowers on his grave. I had no idea when I first visited those hallowed grounds twenty-one years ago that I would return to pay respect to someone that I knew, the man with the biggest heart and the infectious laugh. Everyone who knew Dennis knows he was a hero. That is without question. He was a God fearing man who loved Jesus, loved his family, and gave his life for people he didn't know. I am honored to have called him my friend.

Not a year passes by that I don't think of you and your babies. I pray that you have found healing in all these years. I am thankful that I got to meet Dennis when I watched the kiddos while you both went out for your anniversary. I mourn with you and have not forgotten his sacrifice. I had the honor of flying Dennis out of Iraq on the first leg of his journey home. I will ALWAYS remember that day as well as the man I never had the pleasure of formally meeting.
In 2007 I delivered two Memorial Day speeches in southern Minnesota. During a portion of the speeches I paid homage to CWO Hay and memorialized his service to our country. I'd like to share a brief exert now. If anyone would like a copy of the entire speech, please contact me at: [email protected]
May God continue to be with Dennis' family.
"...After properly preparing the aircraft to transport CWO Hay, my fellow crewmembers an I fell into formation with the numerous columns of proud yet deeply saddened Calvary men who where formed up behind the plane. After a ceremony memorializing him, CWO Hay's closest buddies stepped forward and carried his flag draped casket into the back of the aircraft in disbelief. They now exalted high in their shoulders, the one who had impacted all of their lives in such a positive way. There was no Hollywood soundtrack in the background. There was no band playing. It was just a hot and dusty evening in the Iraqi desert. I witnessed the definition of sorrow like I had never seen before – the mental anguish caused by a deep loss. Tears of grief poured from the eyes of these men who had formed the solid bond of brotherhood with this great warrior, whose memory will be forever engraved in their hearts and minds and in mine as well.
As the sun was setting we took off while the entire formation of Calvary men saluted their comrade one last time. The flight back to Kuwait was somber and quiet. I thought a lot about all of the blessings and abilities we so often take for granted. I thanked God for allowing me to live another day and I asked Him for the strength to be a better person."

I knew Dennis back when he was a young Airman at Ft Stewart. Awesome guy. I remember doing PT with him....well I saw his back on the two mile runs. He alway went after the challenges. Airborne school, Ranger school, PJ school and than goes into the Army to fly Helicopters.. I was a recruiter for the USAF in the mid 90s and saw the AIRMAN magazine article about him in PJ school. Always wished I could have had more contact with him to talk to young people....He is one of the Best of the Best.

I was a member of 3rd ACR. I had left the Army to join the Army National Guard so I could pursue my education. I came back to Ft. Carson to reset their aircraft and deployed with the unit as a civilian contractor. I was there on the day that he gave his life. I am now back in Tal Afar with the National Guard and it brought back a lot of memories. I just wanted you to know that I stopped by and paid tribute on the anniversary and that you are all in my heart every day.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Dennis, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

A few weeks ago a group of runners crossed Oklahoma on their way east. Here in Woodward county along US412 flags were planted every mile. With the flag was a tag with the name, age and date of death of a fallen soldier. Today on my way to church I stopped and took the tag belonging to Army Chief Warrant Officer Dennis P. Hay from one of the flags.
Dennis you and your family will be in my prayers.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I, too, just learned of Dennis Hay's death. As a navy wife in Connecticut, I met the Hay family through our church. Patty hosted a baby shower for me after the birth of our daughter, Shanna. And Bridgette was at my son Jeremy's first birthday party. I was so sorry to hear of your loss, even over a year later. Many memories are floating through my mind right now. And though time has passed, I will still be praying for all of Dennis's family.

I just learned of Dennis Hay's heroism and death. I knew Dennis as a 15 year old who wanted to fly. He was a great artist. He was a little brother to me. He accepted me into his family as a 19 year old Navy wife who was far from home and family and my husband was often away. The Hay family took me in and one time I remember Dennis saying to my husband, "This is Melissa's home away from home." He had an awesome smile that I can still see today. My heart aches for the Hay family and thier loss. I found out about Dennis' death through an internet search for his Mom. So Patty, if you read this I am looking for you!

My deepest sympathies are with the Hay family, and with Dennis' wife, Rebecca and their children.
I knew Dennis, his brother Barry, and his parents when they lived here in southeast Virginia in the late 80's. I consider it a gift and the greatest pleasure to have shared a little bit of life with Dennis.
Words I can say or write can neither describe nor assuage the grief I felt when I stumbled upon news of his heroic demise this morning, over six months after it occurred, and over 15 years since I last saw him. A veritable flood of memories engulfed me like a river engorged in the Spring. Memories of free-for-all snowball fights in front of the Hay's house, bashing through the halls of Denbigh High (where Dennis had the guts to join Chorus, mind you), or even a nice Sunday morning with he and his fam at Beechwood Baptist, where we were both active in the youth group. Dennis, with that crazy haircut he sported with much enthusiasm. :)
Of all the people I've known in this short life, the one figure who best embodies the sense of "You're never fully dressed without a smile," it would be he whom is the subject of this written celebration.
Dennis' life is a wonderful testament to how the rest of us can live our respective lives, day to day. Tomorrow, the next day, and everyday thereafter, when I get up to start my day, I shall remember the great gift that life truly is, and the opportunities that we all possess to better the world around us daily, if only by a little bit. Dennis would have settled for nothing short of this, in my opinion.
God Bless America. This country was made better through the personal sacrifice of one CW2 Dennis P Hay. I miss you, brother. Vaya con Dios.

Our son was a hero long befoe he died. He lived his life to the fullest in everything that he did. He loved his wife and his children above all.
Dennis loved to fly. When he became a pilot he told us he had finally found what he wanted to do when he grew up. He couldn't believe he got paid to do something he loved so much.
He believed in his mission and supporting his ground brothers. He believed what he was doing was making a difference for the children of Iraq. He gave the ultimate sacrifice. "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." John 15:13.
Dennis had a style of flying that he believed could save the other pilot's life in the event that he was shot. It was his only motivation for flying that way. He told us that being responsible for someone else's life was his utimate concern. Dennis lived as a valiant and honorable man, and he died as a valiant and honorable man. His style of flying did prove to do exactly what he believed it would do, it did save the other pilot's life. Death is not the end for Dennis, only the begining of life eternal with our heavenly father. We will see him again one day. Can't wait to see your awesome smile son. Love, Mom and Dad.

We were saddened to hear the news about Dennis. I met Dennis at a Gideon Prayer Breakfast with his father before he deployed to Iraq. A fine American Warrior who knew Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. We can take comfort that Dennis is with Lord as Jesus said in John 11:25 "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live." We give the Lord thanks for the life and service of Dennis. His family will be in our prayers.

Dennis is a hero to those of us who work with his mother-in-law, Helen. We all felt like we knew Dennis personally as she kept us up-to date with so many "Dennis stories" and pictures. I never heard her speak of Dennis that her voice was not filled with so much love and pride. This was truly a case of a mother-in-law knowing her daughter and grandchildren were blessed to have had a husband and father of his caliber.
It is still with so much raw emotion that we say it is hard to imagine this bright, brave young man is gone from our physical lives. He leaves a lasting legacy of bravery, love and devotion to his family, his friends and his country.
Becky sweetie - we are all praying for you, Jacob and Abigail. We will do our part to keep your mother uplifted here so that she can be there for you even more so than she always has been.

With heartfelt compassion we are praying for the family of Dennis. We understand your great loss as we also lost a "son" (son-in-law Jonathon C. Haggin) on July 30, 2005 during Operation Freedom in Iraq.
I have heard wonderful things about Dennis. I was told he wanted to make a difference in the lives of the children of Iraq. I believe we will one day see the fruits of our military's labor shown in the lives of the Iraqi children in the years to come.
Dennis served the Lord and let his light shine on this earth and now he is in the presence of the Lord with Abba Father saying "well done good and faithful servant".
May the God of Peace comfort you and keep you in His care as you walk through your grief. May you also find comfort in that God promises to be a "father to the fatherless" and I pray you one day see that He was there all the time. In Jesus name.
This is him and I going for a nice joy ride in the morning on his new Harley he got in January! He loved it, like he loved most everything in his life!

I knew Dennis and his wife at Ft. Stewart and when he was a ranger. For those who knew him, it just seems impossible that he is gone. I am comforted in the fact that he always had God in his hart and there is no dispute as to where he is now. I have enjoyed being part of his life, from making ice cream with Dennis and his father in his back yard to playing with his dog d-o-g, to serving with him in the military. He was special in every way, and he did what he did because it was just simply who he was. If he were here now, he would tell us that he had been called home for a purpose and hope that we could understand. God bless you Dennis, and your Family.

I am the pilot of the C-130 that gave Dennis his last flight out of the combat zone. I lost track of Dennis some years ago when he was in the USAF as a TACP. I'm truly saddened to hear of his passing. Many question our presence in the current theaters of war, but Dennis was doing what he loved to do and cannot be faulted.
Duty, Honor, Country.
With heartfelt thoughts to his family and friends,

Words can't express how much Dennis meant to our family. He was my buddy and was always a blessing in our lives for many years. He was one of the finest young men that I've ever known. He stood strong in his faith and was never ashamed to share it with anyone.I give much credit to his wonderful parents for the fine young man Dennis was. He will be missed so much. Our prayers are with the Hay family and Rabecca and her family. May God give you grace and may He give you comfort through this tough time. Please take comfort knowing Dennis touched so many lives and many hearts are broken and feeling much pain with you. We love you all.

I was very saddened to hear about the death of Dennis. He was such a wonderful friend of mine growing up. He was never ashamed to speak of our Lord and always left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was a ray of sunshine in this dark world. He could make a grump smile and a sinner a saint. He turned into an honorable man and I am proud to have called him my friend. My continuous thoughts and prayers are with Rebecca, their children, Mrs. Patty, Mr.Barry & all the family. He will surely be missed.

Dennis Hay was a remarkable young man, never "just existing", always making a difference wherever he was. There was always a beautiful exchange of love and respect between him and his parents and family. His precious wife, Rebecca, always displayed love and adoration for her husband and those feelings appeared to be mutual. We will always remember Dennis, not only for the faith he shared, but also for the fun he shared with us all. We thank God for the life of Dennis Hay and for the opportunity to share a few of those years. All of us appreciate his dedication to defending our freedom and the sacrifices he and his family have made.
