Dick Hillis Obituary

Dr. Greg Gripentrog has announced the homegoing of Dr. Dick Hillis, the founder of OC International. The Lord called Dr. Hillis home the evening of December 14, 2005. Dr. Hillis passed peacefully in his sleep at the retirement center where he lived in Ripon, California. Two memorial services will be held to honor Dr. Hillis. The first service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., January 14, 2006 at South Hills Community Church, 6601 Camden Ave. in San Jose, California. A second service will be held at 2:00 p.m., January 17, 2006 at Woodmen Valley Chapel, 477 E. Woodmen Rd., in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1933 at the age of 20, Dick Hillis departed for China as the youngest missionary ever accepted by the China Inland Mission (CIM), founded by Hudson Taylor. After many years of fruitful missionary service in China, Dick and his family returned to the United States in 1950 when the communist takeover forced them to leave China. Within a few months of their arrival back in the States, an urgent call came from Formosa to send a team to evangelize the nationalist troops who had fled to the island from the mainland. Dick answered the challenge and within a few months his team was on Formosa ministering to the troops. In 1951, in response to increasing ministry invitations and opportunities, Dick founded the mission agency known today as OC International, located in Colorado Springs. At the present time OC has over 425 missionaries carrying out ministries which impact over 65 countries of the world.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Those of us who follow in the steps of Dick Hillis give thanks to God for his faithful example as a choice servant of God. I anticipate the privilege of attending the memorial service on January 17th on behalf of HCJB World Radio.
