Don Jorgensen Obituary

Don George Jorgensen
February 14, 1939
March 11, 2023

Don (Jorgy) George Jorgensen died on March 11, 2023, while on a snorkeling adventure near Olowalu Beach in Maui County Hawaii. He left this world soon after watching a sea turtle glide below and giving his daughters the shaka sign, indicating life is great!
Don was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to Margaret (Walchter) and George Jorgensen on February 14, 1939. The family moved to Colorado Springs in the 50s. It is there that he graduated from St. Mary's High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado College.
Don was an educator, a coach (baseball and tennis), an athletic director, and an assistant principal at Widefield High School (District #3) for three decades. He was recently honored by the class of 1972 for being their favorite teacher.
Don was married to the love of his life, Catherine (Kate/Katie) Baldwin for fifty-six years. Their union provided a legacy of children, Jim Jorgensen (Kimberly), Patty Snowden (Rock), Katha Snow, and Tom Jorgensen; grandchildren, Cara G'Sell (John), Sam Jorgensen (Ashley), Maggie Jorgensen, Mitch Snow, Trevor Snow, and Tessa Snow; great-grandchildren, Frances Catherine (Cara and John G'Sell) and Jackson James (Sam and Ashley Jorgensen); and many nieces and nephews.
He taught the entire family to be adventurous and play hard. Don and Kate enjoyed a beautiful retirement of over thirty years, traveling domestically and abroad. They enjoyed hosting family and friends at their residences in Widefield, Colorado, and Cocopah Resort in Yuma, Arizona.
Camping, fishing, golfing, pheasant hunting, couponing, and playing cards/games were his favorite past times. Don was the ultimate competitor, exaggerator, and adventurer. He adored and cherished his time with family.
Don was a great storyteller. Many of those stories include his fraternity brother and dearest friend, Gordon Price, who played an instrumental role in Don's life and will always be "Uncle Gordon" to the family.
Don was preceded in death by Katie, his parents, his sister (Jean Yoder), and many in-laws.
Don was a devout Catholic with an amazing faith in Jesus Christ. There will be an intimate family mass at a future date.

We just heard about Don's passing. He and Kate were good friends of my parents, Pat and Donna Kennedy. They had a tradition of going out to dinner on Friday nights. I remember hearing Don was a game lover and fun golf partner too. Your dad made a lovely dinner for us when we were down getting their place ready to sell in 2022. I know he was a great man. I'm so sorry for your loss

I have been ill and out of touch recently but I have tried to telephone Don only to hear that "my mail box is full." Today I decided that not even Don“ mailbox could be full that many times. Today I found the obituary. For awhile goodbye dear friend, tennis and golf partner. Judy and I are saddened. We loved you and Kate.

One of the few memories I have of the High School is when Jorgensen gave us the "eye". We were supposed to modify the behavior of a rat with reward. A thirsty rat wants water. That was given by the rat pushing a lever and a tube would be raised from the water container into a hole and through capillary action the rat would drink. Time passed so slowly, when finally the rat pushed the bar and I yelled for Rick to give the reward. The tube came up quickly and pinched the rats tongue. We turned toward our teacher after the rat let out a loud squeak and Jorgenen just gave us the "eye". I believe the rat never was trained. He tried to get me into some athletics but I never knew why. He was a nice, thoughtful person.

Don was "Jorgy" to me and he brought fun, great energy and a zest for life that he carried with him to the end (as you describe him snorkeling in Hawaii...how beautiful is that image of Jorgy giving you the SHAKA in his last days!)

The author of the obit was so correct "competitor, exaggerator, and adventurer" ! Who, but Don would jog between shots at PJ? Join his buds to eat SO much fried chicken at the old Dravo Manor that the owner agreed not to charge them if they would only stop??? Upon my Mom's passing Don issued my coaching check early and was the first person so share sympathy with me. It seems that God called him home during a blessed and ideal moment.

This man, Mr. Jorgensen, was my favorite teacher and perhaps favorite man of all my growing up years. I was in his first psychology class, advanced psychology, and was his assistant my senior year. I laughed and learned and belonged to his class. The class of 1977 also honored him, and I have a speech that I will send to the family, especially in his honor. How my life would have been different had he not been a major influence. Chelley Gardner-Smith
