Gary Burnett Obituary

Gary Fain Burnett, 52, passed away peacefully in his sleep November 25, 2010, in Colorado Springs, Colorado from health complications due to diabetes. He was born April 7, 1958, in Louisiana, Missouri. Gary spent his childhood in Paynesville, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska until he and his family moved to Colorado Springs in 1972. Gary graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 1976 and later attended Western State College. After school, Gary entered the field of commercial construction and later owned and operated a video store. Gary loved the Colorado outdoors where he enjoyed four-wheeling, hunting, camping, and motorcycling. He especially loved skiing and excelled as a ski racer for the Broadmoor ski team. Gary later shared his talents and enthusiasm as a ski coach. Gary is survived by his mother and step-father, Sally and Kenneth Mayo of Colorado Springs; brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Teresa Burnett of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Scott Buttermore of Colorado Springs; and step-brother McCabe Mayo of Carlsbad, New Mexico. He is also survived by his seven nieces and nephews: Liz, Sarah, and Thomas Burnett, Cody and Regan Buttermore, and Trinity and Madison Mayo. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Fain R. Carnes, his adoptive father, James K. Burnett, and his grandparents, Frank W. and Vera D. Patton, and Arnold C. and Miriam G. Burnett. Although Gary's family and friends will miss his sense of humor and strong spirit, they take great comfort in knowing he no longer suffers as he rests in the hands of God. A service of remembrance will be held in Gary's honor on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at the Swan-Law Cascade Chapel in Colorado Springs.

I am so sorry to see the announcement of Gary's passing almost 10 years ago. We were the best of buddies in grade school and the first year of junior high. We spent nearly every summer day riding our Honda 50 Mini Trails, racing around the open fields around houses in west Omaha. We had many sleep overs and he even let me join his mouse club with his brother Gary. They had a bunch of little mice around the house! I only saw Gary once or twice after the Burnett's moved to Colorado but the memories have lasted all of these years. Rest in Peace my friend. Scott

Gary was family to my son Travis and myself for many years. He had a
heart that was bigger than life itself. His mother was a Saint when it came to looking after Gary with his diabetes. Rest now Sally, knowing that Gary's loving spirit is no longer suffering in the arms of the Lord!

I am truly at a lost of words. Gary was one of the best friends a guy could ever have. He was so full of life, energy and mischief. I will never forget him. We had so many memories together. Together we went to JR High, High School, College, Broadmoor Ski Team, AMAZING SKI TRIPS, I got drunk for the first time with him, trips to Zermatt, Switzerland, Glacier Bay, Alaska, Camping Trips, and Four Wheel Drive Trips and on and on. Wow, did we have a good time together! Boy did we laugh when the two of us got together!!!! He ALWAYS had a smile, a zest for life, which was hard to match. Gary's nickname on the Broadmoor Ski Team was, "The Star". As he was a natural and gifted skier, but also had a “Star personality. I shall forever look up into the heavens looking at the Stars and know that Gary is now with God and is one of the Stars I am looking at. Goodbye my friend. Gibson Hazard
