Harry Borowski Obituary

Harry R. Borowski died peacefully in his sleep on April 22, 2014, in Colorado Springs. He was born January 24, 1942 in Grant, Nebraska, the youngest of eight children. After graduating from Perkins County High School in Grant and from Kearney State Teachers College, also in Nebraska, Harry taught for a year and a half at Loveland High School, Colorado, and then earned a master's degree in Economic History from the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he met his future wife, Bobbie.

In 1966, Harry began a 22-year career as an officer in the U. S. Air Force. After completing training at Mather Air Force Base, California, he served as a navigator on KC-135 tankers of the Strategic Air Command that were flying missions from Robins Air Force Base, Georgia, in support of Air Force operations in Vietnam. In 1972, he joined the History Department faculty at the U. S. Air Force Academy, eventually becoming a full professor and the acting head of the department prior to his retirement in 1988. While assigned to the Academy, Harry earned a doctorate in Economic History from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and also authored and edited two books. A Hollow Threat: Strategic Air Power and Containment Before Korea (1982) was the first scholarly assessment of Air Force strategic capabilities between World War II and the Korean War. The Harmon Memorial Lectures in Military History, 1959-1987 (1988) is a compilation of the lectures in the internationally-known series, sponsored by the Academy's History Department, and featuring the world's most outstanding military historians.

Following his Air Force career, Harry was a realtor for more than 20 years in the Colorado Springs area. He also served on the board of directors of the Black Forest Fire Rescue Protection District for 14 years.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Esther Otterstein and Theresa Benton, and by three of his brothers, Leonard, Lewellen, and Melvin.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie; his daughter, Janet, husband Jeff, and grand daughter, Heather, of Lafayette, Colorado; his son, Michael, and wife Kelly, of San Diego, California; and two of his brothers, Daniel and Edward, both of Grant.

Arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to: Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation, 13123 E. 16th Ave., B045, Aurora, CO 80045. In memory of Harry Raymond Borowski for the Neuro-Oncology Program.

Colette and I regret that we will be unable to be at Harry's memorial service. As colleagues at the Air Force Academy during many years, I had the first-hand opportunity to witness his genuine and profound humanity. Both my fellow officers and I benefitted immensely, and I will be forever thankful.

Harry started his real estate career @ Walker & Co. & my husband Bill Cain was his managing broker. Bill thought a lot of Harry & was amazed at how quick he picked up on real estate. I sang with him in Soli a couple years, I always called him Harry the Canary! A solid individual!. He'll be missed. A friend Dorothy Cain
